q: RM only works on a rooted phone, correct?

If that's the case it will not root your phone for you. If SPRecovery did not successfully flash a rom, my understanding is RM won't work unless something has changed with RM's functionality.

You did not need to unzip but you did need to rename the file to "update.zip"

No. It could not open the file. I did not unzip the files when I'd run them over to the disk root. Should I.?

Nope. So was it named "filenamehere.zip.zip"? Are you on clockwork or sprecovery?

He is on clockwork but instead of installing through RM I had him put the zip file on the root of his sd card then install through recovery. (thats how I did it)

The filenames are Sapphire-0-8-4 update and Sapphire-0-8-4-gapps- update. And I guess I am on clockwork. Thank you.

I'm wondering if his troubles are CW/RM based. Since there seems to be a problem with CW and sapphire today maybe we need to have him flash SPrecovery and try to install.

No you should not. You do, however, need to rename to "update.zip" and make sure there is one and only one zip at the end
