What are the potential risks of trying to root via Superoneclick, Gingerbreak, or Z4 and it not working?

I just don't want to be the first. The biggest risk is creating a brick if it's never been done.

Their press release was a little vague. Really they said that they would no longer release locked phone.... they said nothing about those of us that already have the phones. A bunch of people have contacted HTC about this and have gotten vague responses.... basically we don't know if, when, or how they plan to unlock phones that have already been released.
