Good move. Its easy to install and I agree the phone just seems to be 'snappier' with this update.
Im waiting!! :icon_ banana:
still a bit confused (although it's probably too late now since i manually updated). so i can't do future ota updates anymore? by placing update.zip in sd card that means it's "rooted"?
No, installing the factory update is not "rooting" it. What he meant was that since the update is already on your phone, when verizon checks it, they won't send it again. Updates AFTER 2.0.1 will install just fine OTA.
Rooting is completely different. It's removing all the "stock" options on the Operating system of the phone and replacing it with a custom OS. Once a custom OS is on, it will no longer automatically update.
Summary, the "update.zip" file is a standard factory update, you just are installing it manually and not waiting for it to be pushed. it doesn't endanger the phone or change the way you will receive future updates. Rooting replaces everything standard and will prevent you from receiving future OTA upgrades.
Exactly right. And I am so glad I did it definitely worth it to manual update.
Yeah there is really NO reason to wait instead of doing it manually besides laziness or if you really have no interest in the update or want to have your 2.0 for as long as possible.
The manual update comes straight from googles site. There is no hacking or rooting involved. You are just skipping the "wait for verizon to send it to me" step.
thanks folks...glad to hear it. i'm glad i updated. everything seems faster.
Sorry if my posting confused you Mach, I misread someone else's post. I've been spending far too much time playing with my phone and reading on forums.
gardobus, there IS a reason to wait other than the reasons you stated. It may be stupid, but I just want to see what the OTA being rolled out to my phone. I know, it is pointless, but I like how the update is being pushed to us instead of having to go in to a store or manually download it.
True, I didn't think of the reason that you just want to see how it works
Yeah, I'm a geek, lol
im not asking what it means to root..
but im asking what are we goin to do nexT?
now that we have rooted the droid?
Pretty outrageous remark. I certainly do want the update but I'm not interested in doing it manually. I did enough of that stuff with the Storm, I can just be patient and wait. That's hardly being lazy.
