We first got word about the Motorola Droid X update a few hours ago, now Verizon has updated the support page for the original Motorola Droid to include a new update as well. While the update doesn't include any of the new features from Android 2.3 or Madden NFL, it does include a handful of improvements as well as the new gmail user interface. Check out the complete list below:

Improvements:
  • Updated Twitter® application with new authentication support.
  • Updated Amazon widget.
  • Updated News & Weather widget.

Improvements to Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®:
  • Handles server-side inactivity timeouts of 34 minutes
  • or greater.
  • Continues to sync emails after a policy refresh.
  • Support for Exchange 2010 connections.
Enhancements:
  • Added new Gmail® user interface

I honestly don't use any of these I was hoping we would get the madden app like the droid x because that's the one game I wanted

I got this update a few days ago and some of the things i noticed...

Increase in battery life
Better response in app drawer

I don't use Twitter, Amazon, or News but I'm glad to see better performance out of my phone. Solid update in my opinion even though I wished for other things from this update.

You can pull the app from the. Zip for the new update and install it on your phone. Should work just fine.

Also, anyone who is rooted and running a custom rom should not take these updates. For one, the developers will most likely include the fixes in their roms (through proprietary files). But the big thing is that they like to try to plug exploits and put in new methods of stopping custom rom users, which makes it tougher to root.

You don't have to do anything - it will come. And they roll it out over weeks so don't worry.
