Home Replacement Apps = Completely new phone experience.

There is no lag on GDE or Panda. The only lag you may find is when scrolling through the applications screen. I actually find the screen transitions smoother in GDE than on the stock Home

The comments for both of those options in the market are full of people complaining about lag?

Not sure, the latest droid update did fix a lot of lag (for GDE).
Try the free Panda Home Beta and see if it lags for you, its screen transition was way faster for me than on the stock droid.

Panda Home'a beta version did seem to be pretty quick and I didn't notice much lag on the homescreen. There was a bit of law in the applications screen, but it wasn't horrible. The icons look as if they were for a screen with smaller resolution, but I'm sure that will be fixed with the final release.

The icon resolution issue is just due to the old theme resolution. If you change it to Default Theme or Hero 2.0 then it looks great and not pixely/stretched.

I bought and downloaded GDE but its not showing up. I accidentally clicked "Use Selection AS Default" and clicked the default home screen instead of GDE. Is there any way to get it back?

Go to settings > applications > manage applications > then hit menu and filter to show all applications > then look for Home and select it > then press the button labeled clear defaults.

Now you should be able to hit home and select GDE as default:icon_ banana:

I just downloaded GDE and I'm amazed! There's a good thread on it over at Phandroid. I'm currently using 5 screens and have the transitions set to "fade". The scrolling through the home screens is SO much smoother than stock. I'm now able to dedicate 1 entire screen to a 4x4 calwidget and another screen to speed dials.

Ok...

I (again) downloaded GDE, and things are far more stable this time.

Whatever revision the developer made, was definitely well done.

Highly Recommended

Happy DROIDing

Well, I skipped another Latte and bought GDE, and am using it alongside OpenHome. So far it seems really smooth and slick, with LOTS of customization options!

I'm going to keep it, but at the moment it doesn't auto-rotate, which was why I went looking for a home replacement inthe first place.

I have the Cube on my Linux box, so that's ultra-cool on the phone! If it's a little bit slower, I DON"T CARE!:icon_ banana:

I suspect that when GDE autorotates and the new version of OpenHome are out, we'll have the best of all worlds!

bought the droid, loved the layout, hated only three homescreens. ive been meddling with the different replacements, and today downloaded the free panda... cause i felt like being cheap like that.

i have to say, i love it. i have not even tried the other replacement apps, but i dont think i have to. the sidedocks are very useful (accessible from any homescreen, so i placed my phone, contacts, messaging, email, browser and voice search on one), and the additional homescreens are just what i needed. i havent noticed any lag in load times between this and the original home, so im completely content.

unless the other apps come out with something i havent thought of yet, i think im going to stick with this one. i will be keeping up with the others tho. but for now, panda is pretty sweet!

I agree, the Panda beta I was playing around with last night was very clean and responsive.

Multiple adjustable side docks, cool interface with adding extra workspaces, and it works with every theme/skin for every home replacement app... pretty cool. The official release is due out today, I'll be replacing my beta in all likelihood.
