Home Applications

I thought that perhaps we can create a list of HOME APPS and what peoples thoughts were instead of it all over the place cause i am a big fan of these home apps and i am not rooted. So i figure between the people who are rooted vs non rooted people can give out their thoughts an exp, and what they could recommend. I notice that many NOOBS, that this is a big question for them too...and i may not be a NOOB but i am always looking for a great home app. Thanks.

So i will begin, listing what HOME APPS i know or heard about and will provide my own exp with it.
NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PICK UP THE APP HOME SWITCHER. THIS WILL MAKE IT MUCH EASIER FOR YOU TO SWITCH OUT HOMES.

______________________________________________

1. STOCK HOME - uh no for me...i need 5 screens

2. PANDA HOME - never used

3. HOME ++ - I did like this home app, power strip, disable notifications,
screenshots

4. GDE - I just started to use this to see how it is. Its nice. very cool themes and probably the most entertaining out of all the homes apps so far in my own exp. Supports LWP, Bettercut support, but in the end what i am seeing, it lags too much for me.

5. SWEETWATER - Never used

6. HELIX 1 - this is my primary Home app..so far, fast, LWP support, Bettercut support

7. HELIX 2 - nice looking app, 3d app drawer is nice, decent speed and LWP support. Too slow for me tho.

8. CLOCKWORK MOD - overall a great app. i love the Navi buttons but does not support Bettercut and the Navibuttons take up too much space that could be used for a shortcut bar or something else

9. ZEAM - Just got done using it. I will be switchin out between this one and FREEDHOME. Zeam has a nice helicopter view or pro switcher view, app drawer has button switch, and i love the speed. More to come.
updated: ZEAM now has DIASABLE NOTIFICATION BAR.

10. CRAZY HOME - Never used

11. FREEDHOME - Brandnew (released 5-07-10) Currently using. Pretty nice so far...def check out. Fit up to 24 apps per screen if your not using any widgets, is also has themes you can dl and a switch out. Apps Icon shrink to fit more apps per screen, disable notifications, no pro switcher yet, LWP support, Static WP support, Bettercut Support..so far nice...currently in use right now.

12. DXTOP - NEVER USED

13. OPEN HOME - NEVER USED

14. TAG HOME - Never Used

15. SLIDESCREEN - HAIL NO!!!

16. ADW - up to 7 screens, Hide Notification bar option, ability to adjust scroll speeds, ability to change the app drawer, has a hidden app drawer(this makes it so worth it) ability to change X and Y axis in your app drawer for more apps per screen (in the app drawer only)

17. Extended Home - Never Used

18. Advanced Launcher -Never Used

19. Launcher Pro Beta - Using now, LWP Support (non-interactive, so far) Bettercut support, Landscape mode, 7 screens available, SENSE Screen Selector (very nice feature) Static shortcuts (temp fixed, "phone, contacts, SMS Stock Messenger, Web) SO far the fastest home app yet

So..this is real brief on my exp. But i just wanted to get it started.
I love the fact that we can customize our Droids to what we want rooted or non...and it would be nice to see what others thought on their own exp.

Thanks

Thanks.. I like one message that lists out all the home apps in one big list.

I have used Panda Home and like that it has side pull out drawers and alphabetizes the app drawer.

But I have had some issues and I can not say it is panda home or that it is not.

Yeah for real..i love the home apps that are out there...but
now i am using ZEAM...this one is bad ass..
It even has Helicopter view like the INCREDIBLE...well its called SCREEN VIEW but same thing
lol

For those who want to try multiple Home screens either for evaluation or for different look/feel or functionality, a useful app is "HomeSwitcher" available in the Market. It keeps track of the various HomeScreen apps and allows the user to change from one to another easily.

Of the ones listed, I've tried Helix1, Helix2, and Home++. Of the three, I like Helix 1 the best.

Helix 2: Slower than Helix 1 and I am not a fan of the 3D App Drawer. I did like the ability to hide both the notification bar and icon titles, though.

Home++: Worked pretty well for me. More frequent FC than with Helix1, but still nice. I just prefer the App Dock in Helix to the icons at the bottom for Home++.

Now, if only Helix 1 would let me hide the notification bar, it would be perfect...

I've used a number of the homescreen apps over the last six months. My favorite until recently was GDE. The cube transition effect was nice eye candy, but the biggest advantage from a functionality standpoint was that the seven home screens "revolved" completely so that screen 7 was next to both #6 and #1.

Occasional (apparent) lagginess, but I've stop watch timed it against Helix 1 and the two are virtually identical, at least on my phone.

Moved over to Helix 1 about a month ago. The double tap access to all seven screens more or less compensated for the loss of the 360 rotation feature of GDE. Its biggest advantage, though, was the four permanent app buttons at the bottom. I have them all set to custom icons from "Folder Organizer" so touching any one brings up a particular set of related apps, e.g. document mgt, email related, task/schedule, and phone tools.

Helix 1 is acceptably fast (unlike Helix 2) but I doubt seriously that any third party app is going to be as consistently quick as the default homescreen app simply because the latter is fully integrated into the o/s.

P.S. Just tried Zeam but it crashed my phone twice in the first ten minutes on the phone. Have a feeling it was related to trying to launch it without it being the default home app and/or the way it handled my wallpaper. Had to uninstall it completely to get my wallpaper straightened out. It's a beta, of course, and the developers are making no outrageous claims for it. So fair enough.

1. STOCK HOME - uh no for me...i need 5 screens

So far the most stable home screen. It is basic but only have 3 screens.

2. PANDA HOME - never used

You can theme your own home on your laptop. It is simple easy, but to cartoonish for me. It is a nice little setup though; it is not ready to be a primary home replacement IMO.

3. HOME ++ - I did like this home app, power strip, disable notifications,

Too many f/cs for me.
4. GDE - I just started to use this to see how it is. Its nice. very cool themes and probably the most entertaining out of all the homes apps so far in my own exp. Supports LWP, Bettercut support, but in the end what i am seeing, it lags too much for me.
Never used
5. SWEETWATER - Never used
Never used

6. HELIX 1 - this is my primary Home app..so far, fast, LWP support, Bettercut support

So far; the king of home replacement apps imo. But it does lag and f/c every now and then

7. HELIX 2 - nice looking app, 3d app drawer is nice, decent speed and LWP support. Too slow for me tho.

Too unstable for me

8. CLOCKWORK MOD - overall a great app. i love the Navi buttons but does not support Bettercut and the Navibuttons take up too much space that could be used for a shortcut bar or something else

Never tried but heard it was very similar to HL

9. ZEAM - Never used (just heard about it yesterday)

It is still in the beginning stage. It has potential but so did Jamarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf. If the dev do something with it; then it could compete with HL IMO, if not then it will be a bust.

10. Crazy Home - Never used ( just heard about it yesterday)

11. Freedhome - it too has potential....but the dev have been listening to the folks on this forum. Just installed so I will see what it can do today.

My input is in red. And JSH1120 made a good point, if you going to experiment with home apps install home switcher. I would also recommend not setting it as you default until you know it is stable. In its beginning stages HL2 would be stuck in a f/c loop making your device useless.

Just DL'd HomeSwitcher. Nice app. Simple and straight forward. Started to play with Zeam but will be sticking with Helix 1 as my main home app for the moment. Thanks for the list/tips armeddroid and pilotcharles747. Good stuff in this thread. dancedroid

dxTOP is my absolute favorite, 5 screens. You can create categories for the app drawer.
Lots of extras and it is fast

Monty

I've tried helex and zeam, both real nice, but DxTop is way nicer and easier. Long press on any icon or folder to change icons, lots of other things with it. Fast and stable!
