tablet Skype via Verizon tether on DroidX

Set up Skype on Asus tablet using tether to DROIDX on Verizon. Would not connect. Is there some port that is blocked? Frustrating to not be able to view family at reunion. This stuff is supposed to work.
Other services work ok on tether.
Suggestions?
