Moto Droid Supposedly Getting Froyo on 7/13

I was on pins and needles waiting for FroYo, and I didn't want to have to root to get it.

I finally got so sick of waiting. Heart pumping like a hummingbird and hands shaking like a palsy victim, I flashed SP Recovery and installed a "stock" FroYo ROM . . .

I have no idea what I was waiting for! Now that I'm rooted, I understand people that look at threads with prospective release dates for FroYo and just shake their heads. I see no reason to ever go back to stock.

If you're still on the fence- just do it already! Research how to get your phone back to stock and how to backup in case things go wrong, but that's just for peace of mind. Trust me; you won't be going back.

:blackdroid: Give yourself to the dark side. :blackdroid:

welcome to the root side :) I seriously dont see why people debate this for hours, if you want to do it, do it, dont just sit there and think about it!

What do you mean "debate for hours"? I've been debating this ever since..... about a month before I even ordered my Droid. XD That's a good few months... and QUITE a few hours, you think? Still can't bring myself over the edge to make the jump. I almost did a few days ago, but then I figured that if the rumors were true, and the 2.2 OTA was really coming on July 13th, that I would just wait until the OTA and save the update.zip just in case. I have no idea why. :P But now I'm still leaning toward the non-root side. But still on the precipice.

And to think I told all my friends it was coming out today. I sure feel like a dumb@$$. Maybe I am just to early, I've heard from other sites that it will start mid-day, if it does. Luckily I rooted back when all we had was FRFxx. I was looking forward to the roms Peter Alfonso and JRummy were going to make from the official OTA though. D@mn you VZW!

so, it's definitely not coming out today???

No it's definitely not coming out today. It looks like August 1 now.

If you don't wan to root then don't root. Don't let anybody talk you into it unless you really want to do it. It does void the warranty and that is a concern to many people.

I'm not savvy enough to root it, which is why i was hanging on all the rumors that it was coming out today - oh well... i was really hoping for the update quickly, since my droid is only 6 months old, but it's already a dinosaur.

I believe the X is in stores inventory with version 2.1 .... so while it's possible we could get Froyo today, I don't see it entirely likely.

Verizon won't do anything that might jeopardize the projected cash flow of people upgrading their phones early. If that means jerking their customers around, they'll pull till the rope breaks.

Forget about public relations, customer loyalty, and satisfaction that encourages people to sign up for another contract after the first one ends -- or just staying onboard without a contract (which gives them LOADS of money) because the service is so great. If it means squeezing a couple of people dry today, they'll do it. Business is rarely farsighted these days.

The upshot of this is Verizon is going to delay and delay and delay until they think everyone who is going to jump ship to a new phone has already jumped, and then push out the OTA update either quietly so people don't noticed how sore they are or with as much fanfare as possible to impress the people who haven't been paying attention. If you have any doubts, look at how stable and fast each of the custom ROMs built from source are at the moment, and those are mostly just a single person hammering it out on his PC in his spare time. Motorola and Verizon supposedly have whole teams on this and supposedly have been working full time for weeks if not months to get this out.

With that in mind, if you want some sweet FroYo goodness now you'll have to root. If you don't want to root you'll have to wait. Don't let anyone convince you to root if you don't want to, and if you're on the fence the two most important considerations are voiding your warranty/possibly bricking your phone and just how much help you'll get from this and any number of forums on both rooting and fixing a "bricked" phone. Listen to hookbill on this one. He's been on both sides many times now and has salient points for both views.

how is verizon delaying it? they never said when it was coming. to delay something you have to give a expected date first then not deliver

You can search the forums for Froyo features/updates. I did read that there will be 5 home screens, and that the phone and two other buttons will be permanently anchored at the bottom the display so no matter what home screen you are on, the phone button is always present, beyond that, I am not sure.

As far as rooting goes, I just not going to do it. Technically savvy? yes, I am, I have built computers, repaired them, etc. etc. so it's not a fear of the unknown. My main concern is voiding of the warranty. If I had 500 bucks or more to get another Droid, or pick up a new Droid X if I bricked my current phone, then, I would do it. Since I don't, I am not taking the chance, regardless of how small some people claim it is. (I have read enough "Oh crap, I bricked my phone" threads to realize that bricking is a serious possibility)

If it's delayed by VZW until Aug 1, then so be it, I can wait. My Droid runs fine, so, I am not worried.

Does anyone have a list of the updates that are coming with 2.2 yet?
