phone wont boot into recovery

I have tried multiople times to get the phone to boot into recovery by holding the x key on the physical keyboard and the power button, no dice. what would cause this?

What does it actually do? Will it power up but just not boot into sprecovery?

It boots normally except that i dont have service until i reboot again.

Not sure this is correct, bu if it was me, I'd reflash the recovery image via Terminal Emulator:

su

flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.2b.img

reboot recovery

Note, there is a newer recovery image .3b maybe(?). It's available on alldroid.
