Starting today my Droid running Froyo will not boot into the Clockworks recovery mode as it always has in the past. I hold the X key while powering it on and it still boots as normal, not into recovery.

Any ideas? I need to apply an update file.

May have to reinstall it. Go to Rom manager and reflash.

I assume you used Rom Manager?
If so it is a know froyo bug, tofix:

    Go into Rom Manager
    flash alt recovery
    flash back to clockwork recovery
    reboot recovery
