Password retention with Browser

I'm testing access to a web site through the Motorola Droid (original). I'm prompted for my credentials when I make my connection to the site through the browser and can connect. After I log out and disconnect, when I try to connect to the site again, I'm no longer prompted for my credentials. I've checked the settings and I do not have 'save passwords' checked. I order to clear the password I go to browser settings and select clear passwords under security settings. What is odd is that the setting above that is 'Remember Passwords' and it is not checked.

is there a way to disable the retention of the user credentials so they are not passed through.

The credentials are entered over https so I'm even more surprised that the credentials are retained.
