Social Networking can be an important part of ones job. I do have FB, Twitter, LinkedIn and Buzz accounts. I update them daily - sometimes the same info, sometimes different. Why? For the type of work that I do, it's important that my online image is consistent. I want people to be able to find me and get a sense that I'm involved in my industry. Doing this has directly led to money in my pocket so it's worth it.

There may be folks using Social Networking to increase their sense of self worth but realize there are other reasons as well.

i dont mind facebook, but i dont want to help someone raise their barn, or tend their crops, or feed their fish, or complete a hit on a rival mob boss.... all those fb games are a bit too much for me. i use it strictly for keeping in touch with old friends, and for passing the time at work.

(i need to slack on the drinking, i had way too many typos to fix in this post...)

Agreed... I don't care that you found your dog in Yoville... But, I was a hater like the OP until about 6 months ago. I joined FB and I'm glad I did. It allowed me to find several of my old USAF buddies I'd probably never hear from again (one of which actually lives near me), and brought my sister and I closer (we both suck at keeping up with the phone calls)... So, it is what you make it.

I use Linked In for professional networking. FB can be tedious but I have reconnected with old college friends I lost track of and I am really thankful for that.

BUT, I swear on the lives of my children, I just do not GET Twitter. I don't give a flying F*** what some celebrity thinks or is doing. And sorry, I guess I am just not that profound that I have gems of ideas or thoughts that need to be shared with others. News? Please. Like there aren't hundreds of media outlets with PROFESSIONAL journalists giving away well written and researched news when I want to read it. Can some one explain what I am missing about Twitter?

Some good points for I see how it has application but I guess what keeps me away for real is some people just putting way too much info up. Its like gag me please.

I am glad I am not the only one to see it my way.....But to each his own, really!

I just had my 25th HS Reuninon, I started using FB about a year ago to find/catch up with friends that were lost in the years from HS. I also found or they found me alot of people that I did not socialize with in HS. So for me FB is like HS, I have people I talk to regularly and those that are there but I ignore...lol

I don't care for facebook, I'm too busy posting in here for twitter anymore, though I do drop in just to say hi every now and then. But basically Droid has taken up all my free time. And some time that is not so free.

Still I have nothing against social networks, I just wish that when I do get on them they wouldn't discuss television shows they are watching. I time shift everything I watch and when I do get on twitter that seems to be a big topic and I can't participate.

Im not big on Facebook but i do use it. A couple months ago i was involved in a catastrophic events. Cell service was temporarily interrupted but thanks to Facebook i was able to post an "i am OK" message and not have friends and family worrying or franticly try to call me. So i have a little more respect for it.

Make sense too. If I need to communicate this way I couldnt because I am not setup too. Something to think about.

Overall I guess there are levels to it.
Random chatter.... not for me
Getting info fast.....Could be useful.
Making money from......sounds good.

I like Facebook, use it daily and I enjoy it. I do not however like of the games and block everyone of them as soon as I have a chance (I just cant stand the "news" about your chicken on my wall). I have been able to reconnect with several old HS friends, old co-workers, and over 15 old Navy buddy's from 1992 (thats 18 years ago). Some of those guys I looked for via the internet and could never find them. How wonderful is a thing like Facebook that allows me to re-connect and find old friends? You can make Facebook as good or as bad as you want.

One point I do agree with here, is the fact of how people feel the need to post when and how they're going to the bathroom, or going to sleep, or bored, or watching TV like hook mentioned...

Yes, that is unnecessary....and benefits no one....

I, personally, have no use for any "social networking" things. My life isn't even interesting to me and it would bore the rest of you to tears! I also don't give a damn about what people I don't know think is interesting. I'd like to keep whaterver privacy I still have.... One trend I'm getting more and more pissed about is the trend to forcing people to Friend or Follow or Face or whatever in order to enter contests or post on some blogs or forums. Is there some big prize if you have the most people facefollowing? It seems to be begging for attention and arrogant at the same time..... /rant

I am a big time social networker.
It depends on how you utilize your social networks, for personal or for business.
In todays society, its not only about what you know, its also who you know. With FB, i have been able to reach huge webs of networks all over the world. Myspace is great if you want to promote your products or services to many different types of demographics.
There are thousands of people that utilize global networks for business, personal, education etc. the list goes on an on. The thing is, what you dont realize is that WWW is a social network using a global brain for communications, resources, information of every sort.
I mean even Forums is a concept of social networking. I am quite sure people on this site have gotten personal emails from each other by meeting them in here.
think about it
You post here for assistance or to whatever here on a forum.
Your talking to people. And in the end you will either benefit from this site or you dont.
you post hoping that someone will answer or not.
All forums are another form of social networking.
but in the end
To each and to his own.

ugh social networking. nice to keep in touch, but the twittering, and updates and buzz, all self fulfilling actions to feel important. :)

And this.

I agree that the vast majority of people use it to waste time and feel more important, but it definitely has positive potential. Every once in a while I'll trim down my friend list since I'm not big on friend collecting (who cares if there are hundreds of people on your list if you only talk to 20 or so?). It cuts down on the crap and you can block status updates from all the games and apps other people post.

Ease up some, what if we gave up on this internet thing in the beginning because all people wanted to do was look at porn and play games? :icon_ devil:

Well I have a facebook, twitter, and a myspace. The only one I check out on a daily basis is facebook. But I am irritated with all three haha.
Facebook was better in the past when you had to have a valid student email to join... now anyone can just sign up and there is a lot of spam on the site. I hate the random friend request and people that have a thousand friends. The games are killing my slowly and clutter my feed.
Twitter is new to me and I only made an account so I could use Twitdriod haha. Myspace is dead.

One thing that I find hilarious is the fact that New outlets use twitter feeds as a viable source for a story. ESPN is notorious for doing this and I've even seen it on CNN.
