Aaf put you on the right track for rooting the Bionic. I would like to add a few precautions:
1. After rooting your phone, DO NOT delete any apps!! You can rename the via Root Explorer (xxxx.apk to xxxx.apk.bak). That way you can change the name back if things do not go well without that app. Or you can freeze them with an app such as Titanium Backup. They can be unfrozen with the click of a button.
2. After you root, buy Bionic Bootstrapper from the market. You can then use it to install Clockworkmod Recovery and make a virgin backup. Make this backup prior to changing anything on your phone. This will allow you to restore back to this state easily.
