No, it doesn't matter
Phone off (at any point)
Charge to 100%
Use normally to 10%
Phone off again and charge back up to 100%
This calibrates the meter to your battery

I did mess up then, did not know after draining to 10% you had to turn it off and charge to 100% again. Thanks for the tip, I'll give it another shot.

I've got a regular razr, and my battery life is great, I never plugged it in yesterday and have been at work all day today and still have about 25% left, ics hasn't changed a thing as far as battery life goes for me, I will however have to plug it in at my other job tonight.

Right...the second full charge sets the "full" flag.

Squeak.....while his (FoxKat) post is still fresh.....click on him and read his battery posts. Tons of solid info on how to get the most juice from your phone's "heart".
Get a cup of joe and some time before you start. It's great info presented in an easy to understand manner. And, no, he don't pay me for the endorsement :)

Haha ok. Good thing I have nothing to do today.

Out of curiosity, what does everyone have their screen brightness set to, and what would you recommend it to be to help save on battery use?

Yeah I normally use auto brightness but recently set it at 20% to see if it helps with battery life. When I use my phone moderately to heavily it seems to drain the battery fast. Is your screen usage usually that low?

Disappointed in Razr Maxx

I purchased this phone for the "phenomenal" battery life, and since day 2 I've been scanning forums trying to see what is wrong with my battery. I've done about 10 FDR and wiped the cache multiple times, checked all the settings, etc. I even tried the .215 leak. I now have a refurbished replacement Maxx and so far it seems to have the exact same battery life. I bought this phone so I wouldn't have to worry about settings, disabling this and that, etc. I'm not a heavy user, I have an exchange email setup and want to use the 4G speed the phone was designed for, but I barely get a day of use. Not a big deal now, but when I travel I will really need the extra juice. I could go back to my Samsung Fascinate with it's extended battery (about the same size as Maxx) and that thing would last forever. What have you done to this phone Motorola???? Sorry for the 1st post rant, I'm just super frustrated/disappointed with this phone.

Welcome to the forum hawkintx. Let's see if we can help because you should be getting at least a day or more depending on use. The first thing you need to do is calibrate your battery meter (not your actual battery but the phone's meter that reads the state of charge for your battery). Sometimes that is off. FoxKat has some excellent threads in the battery forum on this subject, but to get you started, first:

-with the phone off, charge it to 100%.
-use the phone till 10% charge, then turn off and charge to 100% again.
-after this cycle, you can use your phone and charge as you normally would.
-do this meter calibration every 2-3 months.
(I tend to get this process slightly wrong every time I post it but FoxKat will come along and correct me where I got it wrong).

Next is to take care of some of the battery hogs:
-in ICS, data-network is set to global as default. This sucks battery big time. Go into your settings menu, go to "more..." directly under data usage, then select "Mobile Networks" then "Network Mode" and select LTE/CDMA. If you are in a 3g only area mostly, there is a way to set it to 3g only which saves even more battery. If you need that info, let us know.
-if you are using wifi, turn data off.
-setting your sync settings on emails, facebook, any apps that like to sync data takes allot more battery when syncing automatically rather than syncing periodically.
-your display uses up the most battery. Best to set the brightness at auto or to keep it at 30% unless in the sun and you need 100% brightness. There are power control brightness toggle widgets you can add to your homescreen that make toggling these settings on-off easy. I use widget locker and have that set up in my status bar so that the power controls are always within easy reach.
-many people use smart actions but I don't. So others may be able to help you with those settings.

Hope this helps you get started towards longer battery life.

I haven't called Verizon yet about a new phone...for some reason when i use an Evo charger my battery gets a better charge lol. Either way i sympathize with other unlucky folks in this thread...without wifi i can't make it through the day. It's ok though, i see a gs3 in my future :)

Thank you for the very detailed recommendations. I've done all these steps, and double and triple checked them. As far as the battery training, I charge it with the power off every night, unless I am traveling which I've not done with the Maxx. I have let the battery get below 10%, which apparently is a no no? Honestly it seems like there is some magic sequence to the cache wipe/FDR dance that works for some but not others. I am holding out hope that they will release an update soon to address the problems as they seem to be pretty widespread. Quick question, what is a realistic expectation for Screen On time? I have been close to 4 hours, but that was only one time. I don't stream music or videos, so my expectations may be too high. I see some users claim 6-8 hours of screen on time. The 2 days+ of battery time doesn't mean anything to me unless they are using the phone. Thanks again for your input!

I agree with you... It is hard to know how much someone is actually using their phone and for what when they boast 2-3 days without a charge. I use my phone a lot, have tons going on in the background, way too many apps and on average get about 24 hours.

There is a real easy update to the .215 leak that seems to help battery life and someone just reported that they extended their dismal battery life up to 32 hours ny doing the factor data reset via the recovery menu instead of through the privacy settings on the phone. I am actually going to try both and see what happens.

I've actually tried the factory reset both ways, through the Privacy settings, and through the recovery menu. Interestingly when resetting through the recovery menu the phone did not wipe all the internal data. There were a couple ring tones I'd put on the phone that still showed up after the reset through the recovery menu. The FDR through the Privacy settings did clear everything.

This morning I tried a quick experiment, woke up at 5am so I pulled my 100% charged Maxx off the charger and turned it on. Quickly made sure phone was not on Global mode and that GPS was off, wifi was also off. I laid the phone down and went back to sleep. Three hours later I picked up the phone to check on it and it was down 7% to 93% battery. I proceeded to check email on the phone and checked what had been using the battery. Kernel had used 53% of the battery (kernel had burned 53% of the 7% that was gone). Screen on time after checking email and battery was 11 minutes. The battery had dropped another 3% to an even 90% at this point. So maybe 2% per hour is perfectly normal while the phone is idle? At this rate of drain Gsam battery projects 52 hours of battery life left, so in theory I can get two days of "use" if I don't use the phone.

I have not tried muliple FDR and Cache Wipes in succession on my replacement phone yet. Maybe I'll try that in my spare time today. Thanks for making it a challenge to get the potential out of this phone Motorola!
