I bought my phone through Amazon, and naturally, did not lose unlimited. I can't imagine why you'd think you would.

As for problems (assuming you're referring to warranty), Verizon is responsible for servicing the warranty regardless of where you got the phone. If someone at a store tells you that information is incorrect, you can rest assured that it's not and your phone will be replaced if it's in the warranty period and is a covered manufacturing defect.

 I dunno... never bought from a 3rd party. I guess what I'm concerned about is that they'll screw up the contract renewal. Normally, that wouldn't be a big deal, but since I'm hoping to keep the grandfathered data, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't risking losing it...

Only time you lose it is if you ever take it off.

If my contract is up, is it a better idea to cancel an old line and add a new one to get better pricing at amazon/wirefly for new lines? I would be giving up the unlimited data plan if I did this. As far as my number, I could care less.

How come my VZW data counter stops at 11.03G for the last 2-3 months? When I get the text (just now I checked) I'm over 19.6G. Something going on or does it just stop there now. Is there a fix?

No, you only get one exchange and it will cost $35.

It is true that you only get one exchange but if you return a phone within the 14 day period....don't do the exchange, just return it and say you did not like it and just want to stick with your old phone (if you used an upgrade and are not a new customer of course), you still keep your upgrade. Then come back the next day and use your upgrade to try a different phone. You can keep doing this until you find the right phone for you.

I had my dx, used upgrade for d3, returned it a week later, then used upgrade for bionic, returned a week later, got impatient waiting for razr so I decided to give Bionic another try, still didn't like it so returned it and finally used upgrade for razr before I was happy. If I am getting locked in for 2 years, I want to make sure I am happy and just trying it out in the Verizon store isn't enough to be sure. Yes, I had yo pay a $35 restocking fee each time but I was ok with that knowing that I would end up with a phone I would be happy with.

Question: I'm on a family plan. There are 4 phones in the plan: 3 smart phones and one flip phone. My parents have the two other smartphones and don't use much data. After the family share plan switch, will I be able to use their upgrade while keeping my unlimited data? Would Verizon have any clue if I had one of them upgrade without doing a "upgrade transfer" to my phone, and took that phone and put my LTE sim in there? Would I be able to use the flip phone account to upgrade w/o losing my unlimited data, or would that line have to then automatically pay for data once I upgrade that account?

Usually, Verizon allows for transfer upgrades, where one line can use someone else's upgrade. But with the new rules I'd assume we'd lose it if we used a trasfer upgrade. I guess my question is how does Verizon know who gets the phone? With LTE I assume after I stick my LTE card into a GS3 Verizon would be none the wiser.

Most likely you would be able to use any of the upgrades for any phone because that is something that they have always allowed in the past. The best way to find out is call or go into the store and ask if you buy on such number's upgrade and put it on your number, will your plan change?

Just can't make a decision

Hi there, this may be just the thread for my conundrum! Hope I'm posting in the right place,
I've had my droid X for years and have been quite happy (even talked mom into her first non-flip-phone with the X2, and she loves it). While I've had occasional bugs that a battery pull or app uninstall usually fixed, upgrading with the new system (2.3.4, which my phone prompted me to do!) cause all hell to break loose. Basically rendered phone unusable as it would crash and apps would close themselves even if I could open them, about 5 minutes of use before the phone acted like it was possessed. I figured out though trial and error and a little bit of research that unmounting my SD card would allow me to at least make and receive calls (which is kinda important since I don't bother with a home phone). Tech support was no help and unless you are under warranty all anyone at verizon will do is offer to upgrade you. Of course, about a week ago I set my phone down and notice a tiny crack in the screen (which is crazy considering how many times I have dropped my phone over the years and never had an issue). So that's all me. But here's my question to you guys. What are my best options for getting rid of this phone? I DON'T want to upgrade with verizon. I used to buy 1 year contracts since that's all the warranty was good for but they don't do that anymore. Now they're talking about the unlimited data (which I have and want to keep). Couple of things to help:
1. I do have insurance
2. My area is not 4g and nobody really knows if that will change soon.
3. I am very picky about my phones and won't settle for something unless I love it.
With my phone no longer able to do a lot of crap (like pics or movies - new puppy pics lost :(), do you guys think the best option is to file a claim? Will that mean I get a refurbished phone? Will I have to deal with the glitches on that and if so will I have recourse if what they send me doesn't work? Considering the deductible, should I just buy off Amazon/ebay and activate it at verizon (can I do that?). Are there more options with phones that way? I'd leave verizon in a heartbeat due to their crappy policies (I kinda like the samsung galaxy) but nobody else covers the area as well. I just refuse to sign a contract with them (and, of the new phones they offer I only really like the droids anyway).
Sorry for the rant - hoping for any suggestions of those who read this whole post :)

Is the Droid x only 3g or can it also do 4g? It doesn't matter if you are in a 4g area because you would still get 3g... but Verizon is trying to get everyone off their 3g only phones and offering some great deals for people who want to upgrade to a 4g phone. You might as well call them, explain the problems with your phone and see what happens.

I have a 3g phone in a 3g area so I'm not really worried about about the 4g, yet. Every encounter with Verizon has resulted in them trying to get me to upgrade by signing a new (2 year) contract. Thus the great deals, and now I'm thinking that the geniuses at Verizon will somehow, at some point in the near future, discontinue unlimited data for all "older technology", that is 3g (even though they don't yet offer 4g in my area).

Even though it doesn't matter if you get 4g on your phone, if you want to get the awesome deals (if they are even available... seems some ppl are getting them and others are not), you would have to get a 3g/4g phone and you can't get a great deal on the phone without renewing your contract. Right now is a good time to renew because you won't lose your unlimited data.

The other option is to file a claim with your insurance. I think you get a new phone but not 100% sure. And if they don't carry that phone anymore, you may have options for the next best phone. And I'm sure the phone they send you will be under warranty. Give the insurance company a call and ask all those questions.

Also, with Amazon, wirefly, best buy, Costco, etc you will also have to do a new contract unless you pay full retail for the phone. With eBay, you don't have to do a new contract but you do have to make sure the phone has a clean esn.

I would start with your insurance, then check with Verizon to see what deals you might have available to you.
