It wants me to pay $2.99 a month for visual voicemail and to access my voicemail immediately. Must be some of Verizon's BS.

You might like YouMail ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm) better. Far more powerful, no 20 message limit, custom personalized answer messages for your callers-uses caller ID and greets them by first name (you can even have custom answer messages in your own voice for every unique phone number), their own app and just miles better than Verizon's voice mail.

It also has phone number blacklist that will automatically ditch unwanted callers and can even play custom messages to them as well... I have a message set up that sounds like my number is disconnected...

"We're sorry, you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again. Thank you."

Works like a charm to stop solicitation calls. Here's a collection of recordings you can insert into YouMail to ward off collectors, solicitors, an ex-girl/boyfriend...etc. http://thephonebooth.com/intercept/

There's even a collection of greetings already uploaded for your use right in YouMail. See image below.
