I am a non technical guy in so calif who loves my droid. Love it so much I bought galaxy tab for my travel entertainment (movies, music, videos and games. I spend way too much time on planes.

Since the complexity of these devices has changed so much, I do not think I am getting full usage. I stopped into verizon store and this gen z kid proceeded to talk about many ways to use his droid and tab.
The things that I am interested are......
Tethering
Hot spots
Tapping into tv

Sent from my Droid using DroidForums App

Which phone do you have? And I assume youre not rooted since you say you don't know much about it.

Tethering is easy once you root your Droid

As for tapping into TV i am not sure about, but i do stream sports from a streaming website. (i won't provide the link as i am not sure if we frown upon them or not)

Read around this forum, there is a ton of information on rooting and what can be done once rooted.

Well tapping into tv there is only one way I am aware of at the moment. and that would be using a slingbox and the slingbox app. Its quite expensive to set up though. If I remember its roughly 300-400 dollars for the whole setup, but hey its streaming tv to your phone.

I have a MOtorola Droid. I have been told about that I need to Root my device, but have read that if not done properly can ruin the phone.
The more i read up on these phones the more i am very impressed. I worked in the cellular industry in the early 90's and i do not think they foresaw all this in hand helds.

there are a couple of guides on here that show how to root and get the things you want. Whats great about the moto droid is that you don't really have to worry about messing up the phone. We have the files necessary to make it operational again if you make a mistake, so don't worry about that part. Just read the instructions first, then follow them to the letter and you'll be fine. In my opinion, rooted is the only way to go. A rooted moto droid can easily hang with any new phone currently on the market.

This very site is a very useful resource for all these topics. I've picked up most of my knowledge either from tinkering around or frequenting various Android forum sites. None of us started out as Android experts.

The existing threads should cover everything and if you need additional assistance you can always start a new thread once you've done some reading and have specific questions.

Just one correction to one of the posts above. Don't need to root to use tethering. Just go to pda.net, pick android, pick android and it will download the software to your PC..then it will prompt you to hook up your phone via usb and will update the phone with that application.
