Verizon does not price match. The problem getting a phone from these indirect dealers is when you have a problem, you have to go back to them within the first 30 days. So say you buy the thing in TX and travel away and need to get a replacement cause your's is fried. You're out of luck because you bought from some dealer who just wants you activation for commission, but has no clue how to do customer service. I've seen this a lot from customers I have helped while working for VZW. I don't work on commission, but it sure sucks to have to tell a customer they must ship their phone back to the agent they bought it from to get an exchange. You may pay $50 more, but you will get personal service
Sheesh, I bought mine today for an undisclosable price, lets just say I did the new every two deal and got a few extra options, and I still have to mail in the rebate to get $100 bucks back and that doesn't even come close to that $150!!! One more thing, did anyone else who went to the Verizon store to get the Droid get the coverage from verizon that for $40 in case you screw up R2-D2 (the droid) will get you a brand new one? just curious
Got mine at a Best Buy for $149.99 out the door. Did not have to wait for rebates. Other Best Buys would not budge from $199.99 - it depends on the manager.
here's a deal for $129... a friend sent it to me to through what he called "wirefly friends and family" site... make sure to change zipcode and plan to the "nation 450" with the "unlimited data" option

Is the Verizon Store or online website still the best place to buy the Droid?
I ended returning my Droid to Best Buy in hopes of getting a better deal. I took it straight to CS. She issued me a cash refund on the price of the phone. She then issued me a credit on the BB gift card. I went over to the mobile section and cancelled. I was told by Verizon CS that the after it was returned that I would be then considered a new customer again.
So, I ventured out to look for the best deal. I found out that Best Buy, Radio Shack, Newegg, and Sears all belong to Simplexity, which is Wirefly's parent company. Amazon is also is a part of a similar parent company. Simplexity as been known for low balling the price of phones to make money off of large volumes of sales. You have to sign on to a separate 6 month EFT with them to regulate your business practices at Verizon which could cause them to lose money. The other negative (I've read) is that you are not warranted from Motorola on the Droid to take it in for service or replacement during the warranty at the Verizon Store. I knew that it was suspicous when I bought my phone at Best Buy and they did not ask me about insurance. Simplexity uses a different insurance company that charges $50 up front and does't cover everything that the Total Equipment Coverage covers.
So, when the smoke clears. I can only see one reasonable place to purchase the Droid (for myself) the Verizon Website or the Verizon Store. Are you able to get the instant rebate though either source? Did anyone get free Activation when they ordered that Friday through Sunday of the launch? Has anyone gotten Verizon to credit them the Activation fees? Is there any talk of such a promotion?
yeah, i dunno about the fine print, could be worth checking out and posting in a separate thread about it if you really know what's going on... i just signed up through wirefly because of their low price and me not giving a hoot about insurance (it's a scam, i say!)...
you sure there won't be problems signing right back up again? usually companies have some sort of clause against this.
I was told by a Verizon CS rep who asked (I guess) her supervisor and agreed with what I stated i wanted to do. She was from the retentions dept I believe. Because when I think that when you return the product within 3 days for a refund and terminate service that your contract is history. I'm ordering from the website now, so we'll see how it goes.
I read an article from a writer a Phonedog.com that stated that he would buy a new phone, put $50 in to a drawer, and add $5 a month to it for his own insurance plan.
