My Motorla Droid 1 is driving me crazy!

I am sick of my stock Verizon Droid any time I exit an app it take 30 seconds or more for my home screen to come back up. It has to be the slowest reacting phone on the planet. I am considering trying a new ROM but have no idea where to start. I know there is rooting, unrooting, and such but whats the right move. I'm not huge on wanting to customize, I just wait a smooth running phone and I don't care what I have to do to get that.

Try going to settings, applications, manage applications. Then delete the large "cache" files from most applications. This speeded up the refresh rate on my D1 quit a bit.

You will have to try a few for yourself. I know it's a sucky answer but that is how it is. You will get thirty answers about which is the best in their eyes.

If you follow the link I posted, you'll be rooted on the stock rom. Then once you understand the process, you'll be able to flash any rom.

Beat advice you will get right there. Definitely try out different roms and find one that fits your phone. They all offer some great features, so you wont come across a bad rom in this forum.

Will I lose all my apps or will I be able to backup everything I have once rooted?

Thanks for the help so far. I think I'll start with CyanogenMod 7, looks like RC4 is the most current for Droid 1, is that right?

Your apps are associated with your gmail account. You won't loose them. If you need help with CM7, just ask.

My recommendation:

1) Rooting first with a stock rooted file and the thread that has already been linked above.

2) Learn about overclocking and underclocking your Droid, which may help you with your screen redraw/lag issues. I think fur had a good thread that I followed after I rooted here (Item #2): http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...ve-rooted-now-what-n00bs-guide-post-root.html

3) Consider trying out some ROMs after you're comfortable with 1 and 2. I recommend trying out AOSP-based ROMs first, until you really understand the process and what you're getting into.

Thanks everyone for the help. I am rooted and overclocking to 800 right now, at least to start with. No screen redraw issue after forcing the home page to stay in cache. I guess I will see how it goes till I can get the next, latest, and greatest phone.

Every phone is different, but I am personally having the best experience with SS 5.2 Gingerbread. Using the lv 1.1 Ghz kernel. 1.2 Ghz or above causes me bootoops. That's MY personal D1 though. Apparently, they all have their own personality.

You look as though you're on your way already to discovering the glorious world of customization/optimization. It's a rabbit trail... but every path leads to new discovery, and a learning experience. THIS is the right place to become informed.

Take your shoes off, kick back and do a little reading. Ignore the trolls (even the ones who live here), and filter out the bullcaca. You'll be able to decifer the difference very soon.

All in all.... welcome, and happy modding.
