and if im not first. im manually installing. i would rather be stock and up to date instead of modded. you know? like im only rooted for the mean time. once 2.1 comes out im sure ill root... but like i wont be looking to do anything other than overclocking.
Just about the time I think I'm starting to get the idea, a whole new page turns and I see a different direction to take and I"m thankful I haven't jumped yet.( i do not have sholes. nor do i have information on it. so i cant really recommend anything. im using evilboot8. to overclock. not bugless beauty)

OK... now your making sense!.. "not that you wer'nt before, but just over my head with the funny names and terms!"Just about the time I think I'm starting to get the idea, a whole new page turns and I see a different direction to take and I"m thankful I haven't jumped yet.( i do not have sholes. nor do i have information on it. so i cant really recommend anything. im using evilboot8. to overclock. not bugless beauty)
I know there are always several ways to achieve the same thing, but when it comes to messing with firmware, I don't like to play around "but once".
I've wondered "why do the root" when we now have so many 2.1 apps out there that are ported to 2.0.1 without the need to root?...
Obviously it sounds like the main answer is OverClock ability which I agree, is a worthy reason.
I don't understand these smartphone processors like computer cpu's.
Normally competition causes the computer cpu's to be released clocked high enough that its difficult to go much higher without alternative means of heat dissipation etc.
So how does the Droid get away with 72% more speed (550mhz X 1.72 = 950mhz)? Must be because its idled down that far from the Motorola....
But why didn't they clock it higher in the first place?...... Maybe they will with 2.1 but I doubt too much.... "it would be ashamed to compete with their Nexus flagship you know"
So I said all that to say.... is there a real advantage to Rooting other than Overclock abilities?
Sorry if my rational is without knowledge.. I"m trying...
i use root to overclock. you can also add themes. or make them. or easily install roms and such. there are also some programs you can use with root only. like the screen capture app.

Not sure what a rom is.... "read only memory" is the only term I know.
I sounds like "for me" the overclocking is the main benefit..... any ideas on how or why we can get away with overclocking so high compared to where we run stock?... is our cpu's really dialed back that far?.... seems crazy why they would purposely limit the performance unless its to allow for bigger and better later "market smarts" to make more money.
2.1 has already been rooted (Nexus).
the cpu was built to run at 600mhz. but underclocked by motorola. overclocking is the biggest benefit imo. i just overclocked to 1ghz.... it seems exactly the same as 800mhz

I don't know the "names" of the processors used in each phone but I"m starting to wonder if the Nexus has the same processor as the Droid???....
Opps... did I mention the unmentionable? sometimes they throw a little more cache memory or such and its the same processor and give it another name.
When you can clock a processor up to 1 Gig... thats almost double the released speed out of the box... it just makes you wonder.
That leads me to the next question... does overclocking give you virtually the same abilities as the Nexus?
God forbid that gets to the press! ..... LOL!
Maybe 2.1 is just a teaser to smooth things out for good with the Droid and all future attention will be directed at the Nexus "which is reasonable if you think about it".
