I would ask that in the Hack section as this could get totally off 2.1 discussion and turn into a hacking thread if we are not careful......just simply reading the discussions looks like you need to get an updated Kernel first.....
I have hesitated rooting until I feel I know what I"m doing.....that means lots of reading and homework.
If your jumping into this without that confidence first.... good luck, either your smarter than me, or dumber or have just have bigger organs... not sure which.....

While may see this stuff as old hat... there is a large gulf between the casual user and those that root successfully........ we all have to learn somewhere.... just make sure you have a good parachute before you jump.
