I downloaded LightBox to use rather than the stock camera app. I turned off the flash (which is easy it's right on the screen) and starting taking pics. I has great autofocus and an instafix option which does improve quality. It's free.
Another nice thing is why it's called lightbox - even if you're taking a picture in low light it shows you what your taking a picture of as if it was in bright light making it much easier to take photo's.
