Gingerbread 6-1-2011

What made you guys move to gingerbread?

If you are unrooted on a DroidX, you will get GB; no way to avoid it forever.

I'm looking forward to free apps in the market that will use the new SurfaceFlinger screenshot API in GB (that does not require root privilege) that will enable the phone to take screenshots.

What made you guys move to gingerbread? I mean you know with something new comes bugs. You know wireless tethering is being tracked. You even know that it isn't rootable yet. So why, why did you leave 2.2 or 2.2.1 from gb? I'm very very curious in what went through your minds.(those that updated) Was it for the M logo being changed to red? Was it so you could close out 1 notification at a time? I mean, it's just like upgrading from a droid x for a droid x2, what's the difference? If any at all, it is very little. For me I'll be on 2.2.1 for now because everything is just so perfect.

I got an update & didn't even know it was Gingerbread. I had to do the download cuz my phone kept alerting me that i had an update that needed to be downloaded. At this point, i don't like Gingerbred cuz my phone seems to be "laggy" now. Anyway to undo this?

I don't use tethering or rooting so those are irrelevant. It's not something new it's 6 months old, so no I didn not "know" it would come with bugs. it's an update with new and cool features why wouldn't I update? Why don't we all just stick with Windows 95? There's not much real difference right?

As others have stated, I don't worry about wireless tethering; especially since I believe in paying for services rendered. Evidently you don't.

Didn't even know about the M logo being changed, and that really would be a dumb reason.

Some probably updated due to the constant upgrade now question; irregardless, this forum is to help people, not try and put them down for doing an upgrade.

From your post, it appears you are perfect too, or you want others to believe so!

Cut and paste is a lot easier.

For a single word cut/paste, yes.
Selecting longer text (e.g. multi-sentence) is a little more work now under GB. Took me a while to figure out how to do it...

Ive updated to GB. Its just as easy.

I simply long press a word: left and right wings appear, copy selected word/sentence, long press highlighted phrase, copy to clipboard then paste from clipboard. Simple.

Took longer to type this than it does to copy/paste! :)

I haven't had much trouble copying, it's "paste from clipboard" that's missing as well as an easy way to place the cursor to fix mistakes like the space bar not working properly.

I did the OTA update and decided to simply wipe everything and start fresh.

I have a rather severe issue with "com.motorola.contacts.data"

This app is demolishing my battery life. I dont know what the hell it is, but it is usually right in line with cell standby as far as its battery consumption. (~30% while idle, ~12% while display on.)

It's outrageous, I dont know wtf it is, but motorola screwed something up here. As a further aside, ive tried a variety of task killers/preventers to nix the thing and it still is consuming.

Before the OTA update I could normally get about 3 days of standby on my droid with very minimal use, now I can barely get 1. What the hell. Can anyone point me in some sort of direction to flash a motorola-free 2.3 on my droid x?

Long pressing a word does not automatically select the word and display the "wings" around the word on my DroidX; it brings up a menu where I have to pick "Select Word".
Double-tapping on a word selects the word, but there are no wings like there were in Froyo.

Yeah, GB removed the 10-item clipboard paste buffer. Now, we only have access to the last copied item.
And no more "Copy All" too... need to "Select All" then "Copy".

I was going to do a factory reset for the same reason, but looks like you did that and it didn't solve the battery drain issue.

"Phone idle" and "Cell standby" are taking up more battery power than they did under Froyo.

That has always made me wonder how that works on the Droid, if i buy an app and then flash my phone, how do i prove that i bought something already? Do i need to buy it again?

Your purchase history is stored on your google account (or amazon if using Amazon Appstore)..
So no you do not need to buy it again.

As for gingerbread, I am very pleased with it :) I've been using it since the first leak and have updated with every new release. So far i have no problems with the rooted OTA from p3. Have also updated my dads DX, my moms DX, and my girlfriends DX.
Dads and mine were easy as we were on previous GB leaks, moms was coming from stock rooted froyo and was easy but ended up having to back everything up with titanium after installing GB and then wiping data because I guess the phone was about to start downloading the update before I updated it myself. Girlfriends was on froyo with a GB theme, so I had to SBF hers and then update, but that wasn't too hard to do. Just didn't help that I forgot the sbf file when i went to her house to do it. Internet sucks at her house so took awhile to download.

So I had a couple different scenarios, all went through pretty well though :)
And we are all happy with our phones.

That's really strange, I seem to be getting better battery life, and the percentages under battery usage are generally lower. Not sure what would cause that.

What were your steps to upgrade to GB?
I have never been rooted, never SBF, never factory reset, etc. EVER on this phone since I got it last year.
Just did the OTA GB update recently.
I do have gmail, yahoo, hotmail, aol, etc accounts, and my contacts sync icon is always on, which is known problem that supposedly goes away after a factory reset.
