Gingerbread 6-1-2011

Wireless tether still works....You just have to pay for it.

And why would I do that? I'm already paying for data, I WILL NOT pay twice. Tell me, would you pay 2x your current cable internet bill (if you don't have cable internet service assume you do) in order to hook it up to a wireless router? Of course you wouldn't. I pay for Verizon for data, it should not matter on what device that data is consumed.

I couldn't have said it any better.

i need HELP I cannot update my rooted DX I am in a pickle. help

Ok my phone is rooted thru Z4. It was a permanent root unfortunately, well for me anyway. I am not a Tech Savy as I thought. So I obviously have decided to go this route and It is getting me very far. I tried so many sites, and youtube videos on how to upgrade my Droid X from 2.2 to GB
2.3.3 (4.5.596) I restored and backed my droid, but I backed it up after I did the 'perma- Root' so when I restore it goes to that point after booted. I am new to the tech abbreviates... bare with me..

anyway,

when I download the file to my SD card, I rename it as update.zip and select 'update update.zip' It fails with error message 7.. an error reading the SD card

What all APPs do I need to download (i.e. Droid2strapper.....) and also I still have the original ROM as well... what ROM do I need?

i also have no new ROM since I booted the phone.. please help

..and now they aren't lighting up at all, which is actually alright with me.

...
i think they turn off when theres enough light on the light sensor...?
- this morning as the sun was rising i noticed if i lay my dx on the desk out of the sun beam, the key lightscame on. but if i lifted it to face the sun coming through the window the lights turned off.

now we just need a dimmer.

I just read your post while on the train ride home from work. When I cover the top of my phone the hard keys no longer stay unlit, when I uncover them they do indeed light up when I touch the screen.

I installed GB while on a break at work today. I didn't root using z4 but I used this to unroot...disabled as block before hand, only thing I had done besides barnacle tether. Went smoothly, no problems so far.
I like the new look and really appreciate the improvements in selecting and copying text, much easier and more consistent now.

I remember not wanting to do the big ota update last year on my d1 and finally it made me, and the fooked up my contacts and market. I couldn't download anything. Of course, standard protocol by vzw techs is "just do a factory reset" so I did and lost all my apps and still couldn't get a market. I ended up getting a d2 with warranty so they did me right, but for a week, I had no contact information and had to call people by dialing. When they called me, all I could see were their numbers (like I knew who they were that way).

Anyways.....I just did the update on a rooted dx with no problems. Its working great for me so far. Good luck to everyone

I just updated my Droid X and all is well. There are many discouraging posts so I thought I would post one that is encouraging.

I had no problems. One of the new things I found is the ability to sort and display (there is a difference) my contacts by last name. This alone was worth the update. Things are generally faster. And I like the new dock, which is user configurable.

That has always made me wonder how that works on the Droid, if i buy an app and then flash my phone, how do i prove that i bought something already? Do i need to buy it again?

My upgrade went just fine. The phone did hang twice w/ in the first hour which gave me pause but has been working fine for the next 24 hours. Droid X seems flaky in general. Mine (stock) tends to hang once or twice a week. It gets turned off about once a day to save battery while not in use.

surprised there isn't more discussion on GB itself ... let's hear favorite top 3 new features. Here's mine:

(1) The "sleep" feature. Almost every work day I have to go w/o the phone and store it temporarily in a phone locker (anywhere from a few hours to nearly the whole day sometimes). Before powering on and off took a while but was worth the battery savings. Now sleeping and waking up happens in seconds. Fantastic!

(2) Being able to modify the dock menu at the bottom is great. One item to make phone calls, one for email and one for browsing saves real estate. I wish android allowed denser packing of icons in general but I guess that role can still be filled with widgetsoid.

(3) text selection / copy / paste is much nicer. Much easier to select a specific letter in a sentence.

Who else? What's your favorite 3 features?

OK I've been looking around for a bit but can't find anything related to my particular problem (forgive me if there's something that I missed!). My husband's X got the prompt (used to be mine 'till I got the TB) and I clicked "later" because I had rooted his phone and didn't want any errors to occur (I know, go ahead and laugh, I'm the phone techy one! ^__^ ).

I then went ahead and backed up the phone and did the manual install of rooted Gingerbread .596 using the D2 Bootstrap and installing the Part 1 and 2 zips.

Everything worked fine and the phone is running smoothly-- I didn't even have to wipe data for him --BUT-- the problem is the phone keeps trying to "update" even though it's already on .596. When it tries, it says "download of update failed" (see attached) so I thought "what if I go into system update so it can "check" and see that it's up to date and it should say "it's up to date" well... when I do that it pops up with the same thing and also another window that says "an update is currently being downloaded. You will be notified when the update is complete" (see attached).

Well of course it's already updated but it's getting irritating that every so often it pops up with one of those notifications on it's own. How do I get it to stop?! Should I try the factory data wipe? Or should I sbf back to FroYo (which of course will wipe anyway) and do the update again and hopefully that should take care of it? Any way to do it without having to wipe?

Why? I really don't get it...

What made you guys move to gingerbread? I mean you know with something new comes bugs. You know wireless tethering is being tracked. You even know that it isn't rootable yet. So why, why did you leave 2.2 or 2.2.1 from gb? I'm very very curious in what went through your minds.(those that updated) Was it for the M logo being changed to red? Was it so you could close out 1 notification at a time? I mean, it's just like upgrading from a droid x for a droid x2, what's the difference? If any at all, it is very little. For me I'll be on 2.2.1 for now because everything is just so perfect.

I just got this update, told it was Gingerbread. REALLY???
What's the benefit of this????? I can't finger through my other desktops like I used to. Isn't there a way to make this easier??

Gingerbread is significantly faster, and for me, my phone is much more stable than when I was on Froyo. Cut and paste is a lot easier. The biggest improvement though is the Blur app for Exchange e-mail. ActiveSync works much better and they added some additional features too.

Root is big for me but luckily p3droid gave us a upgrade path to keep root coming from Froyo or one of the later Gingerbread leak builds. Wireless tether is not a concern for me but I would say that is the biggest deterrent for most people to upgrade.

My rooting needs are with Set CPU, Cache Cleaner, and Shoot Me. Things I can give up for now for Gingerbread.

And I appreciate it more after getting stuck in Bootloader :D and using a Linux boot disc to get me back to stock.

Please search before starting a new thread. There are many threads discussing the update that explain in detail what's going on.
