How much the pentile display sucks? Just compared Buka HD on both the X and the X2. It's not really a comparison, you can see color rings on the X2 on the main screen, on the X it looks perfect. Tried flik kik football as well and it looked very blurry on the X2. I'm about to try some tegra 2 games.. You can see the dots in the battery meter as well, besides that the homescreen doesn't look too bad. I want to try some videos as well, I'll test some youtube HD ones and see how they compare.

I actually like the screen in the X2 much better.

--edit--

Just watched a couple videos in HQ on YouTube and the only thing I notice is it is a bit bright. I pulled up the new FPS Russia video on the X2, X, and LG Revolution and I did not see a huge "wow" difference between them. YMMV though.

What do you like more about it? Just tried some youtube HD videos.. the Tegra 2 definitely gives smooth playback as compared to the X.. however the difference in quality is pretty visible again. X2 looks washed out and the colors are off compared to the X.

I guess if you're not looking for it or don't have the X to directly compare to it would look fine, and the homescreen/normal stuff looks fine. When you get into finer details like HD stuff though I think it's pretty noticeable, the color rings on the game I previously mentioned being an example

That may very well be why I do not notice, gambit07. I do not really watch a lot of videos or game on my devices.

Could be right - not doing any comparisons to other screens...I do know we have watched a few HD videos off Youtube and and Netflix and there was nothing in them that led us to have any quality concerns. Will not be using it for gaming at all (wife's phone, she's not into games)...

This reminds me of TV discussions in AVSForums - you have folks who love a display and others who have 10 reasons why it's inferior...one of those "eye of the beholder" things...and so far our eyes are happy. :)

It's not just you. I've written great comparisons of how much the pentile display kills image quality and ways to blatantly see the problems. It was the very first thing I noticed when I turned the phone on and went "oh god". Even the battery meter in the notification bar shows alternating color-dark pixels in its display. I'll just copy everything over, here you go. Pictures are left in Url format to keep the post shorter.

Green and orange seems to be the most susceptible to the banding problem. Viewing this image on a computer or DX and then on the DX2 makes the problem even more blatantly obvious:

Viewing this page makes the text problem VERY obvious:

Green Background Test Demonstration

It's a hardware limitation. The technology is called "pentile" and can be read about here:

PenTile matrix family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After reading this, it's obvious why the green is having the largest issue with displaying properly. The Atrix apparently uses the same display and people are complaining about that one, too. Google has plenty of hits on it.

Perfect examples of what's going on. The image quality difference is blatantly obvious. The DX1 display is the same as the top examples in each photo, the DX2 display is the same as the bottom ones.

Looking at the photograph example, look at the horrid loss of detail in the pink and dark green areas. Imagine the stripe example as a lower case "L" and look how jagged it appears in color.

Yeah, I'm sending the X2 back just because it bothers me, I'm hoping the D3 isn't using this screen but I'm guessing it is

OK, granted I just started using glasses this year, so my eyes are arguably not the greatest, but for the life of me I don't get where all these complaints are coming from. I am coming from a D1 mind you, but I think the display is awesome. To each his (or her) own I guess.

There is a *little* hope. The D3 is a different screen size, so it's still possible they went with a non-pentile in that case.

I've been keeping Kellex over at Droid Life up to date on my findings, and he just did some actual side-by-side comparisons and sent me this photo. Now it's glaringly obvious of the problems with pentile. If you have a browser that can zoom in and out, you can see how at "normal viewing distance", there is no pixelation in the battery icon and gradient is smooth on the DX1. On the DX2, look at the alternating green-black pixels that simply don't go away until you zoom very, very far out. At normal viewing distances, the checkerboard pattern is still very obvious.

Its one of the things I HATED about the Amoled screens before Super Amoled + came out....

My only question is now do I settle for it if I like whatever phone I get that much that has this effect...

Amazing, looking at the Super Amoled screen on the Nexus S.....qHD takes a step back....and Amoled + takes a step forward.

I had Kellex do a side-by-side of the text on green background. This is undeniable:
