let me just get straight to the point. there is a guy on craigslist who is selling a droid for verizon. he says that after using for a couple minutes it goes into airplane mode and he cant get it out. he basically just doesnt care about fixing it so he is selling it for 200. i would love to get a droid but they are so damn expensive. so does anyone have a possible solution to this problem?

That link is dead but regardless... It can likely be fixed by a good ROM flash or by having VZW reflash the phone. Even if not the phone is under a 1yr warranty. The thing to worry about is if the phone is tied to his contract and if they will release it (i.e. if he gives them the finger and cancels his contract VZW will NOT release the phone until he pays the money).

no its not tied to a contract or anything. he said the esn is clear and of course when i meet him i will call to double check. basically im just wondering that if i buy this phone off him if it will just be a brick and a waste of money

But listen to KZI -- offer to meet the guy at the VZW store, and dont give him the cash until they release the phone from his account.

i am on my families verizon plan and its a month to month and my dad and brother dont want to be locked into a contract. is there anyway to make sure that i will be able to use the phone once its working other than checking the esn or is that all that will matter?

Really the only way you can be sure is to have a VZW employee tell you the phone is no longer tied to an account. Just meet the guy at VZW. If he's really worth doing business with, he'll agree to do this.

Sounds pretty sketchy. Meeting at the store is the best way to protect you.

some people on craigslist are just a pain in the ass. does 200 sound like a fair price to pay or should i pay less. this is the first droid i am going to own and i really dont want to spend 200 for a phone and than not be able to fix it

I am currently trying to help the guy on craigslist with his issue and there clearly is something wrong with his airplane mode. I told him how to get out of airplane mode manually and it did not work so I am now going to try to assist him in installing a custom rom (droidmod) to see if having a custom rom will fix the issue.
