Receiving updates with no cell service

I currently have a droid 3, I had a droid 2 previously that i disconnected from service. Will the droid 2 be able to receive the gingerbread update via wifi if it does not have verizon service activated on it?

I don't want to go through the trouble of re activating it just to receive the update then deactivating it and reactivating my droid 3

So, I suppose you have your reasons, but why are you NOT rooting and using a custom ROM on a non-serviced D2? It's a given that you won't receive an official update...because your D2 is no longer serviced by Verizon. So why not get something better than stock to begin with?
