Question on ROMS

So Im currently stuck on gingerbread and I can not tether.. and I know I would have to sbf back to froyo and do all of that..
But I was wondering if I could just get another ROM, like Liberty or something. Im not very knowledgeable about ROMS and what they do, so is it like a replacement of the firmware? so I wouldnt have froyo, or gingerbread, I would have liberty? and if so, will it be rooted and able to do tethering?

Ive never had a custom ROM before, so I dont even know what I would have to do, and would I lose everything on my phone if I did?

If anyone could basically explain ROM's to me, that would be great.

But getting gingerbread rooted seems really complicated and I don't want to screw anything up..
Idk what I'm going to do right now.. But thanks! Lol
