I've heard that you shouldn't have task killers. Is this true? Do they do something bad to your phone or what?

This is a hugely debated subject that has been covered in detail and i'm sure your gonna get alot of for's and against's. Although you will get both answers, i personally dont use a task killer because its not needed. The apps in the background get closed as the system needs more space. Plus they use no cpu/battery so why run an app (task killer) which uses cpu to close them? IMO
