Is there a way to change the background wallpaper for the lock screen? my friend's htc hero is able to do that, so I'm wondering why isn't there an option for the droid?

Might I recommend the app "Backgrounds?" You can choose from over 500 of them.

Does it let you use your own? or just what it syncs off the web?

You can insert photos into some frames. Not perfect , but pretty good. Nothing to lose. Try it.

OK, others gave you alternatives... I'll give the short simple reason. the Hero has HTC Sense, a skin overlay on top of Android.

(Personal Opinon) It gives you the ability to turn your Android device into a Digitially Clueless Beauty Pagent Queen of a phone, whereas the Droid eschews additional skins and relies on the sleeker and more robust tape a scud missle to a race horse fast Desktop.

That's why you don't have the same options, out of the box.

After the update my wallpaper photo is now also on my unlock screen. I did not do anything to make that happen, it just did.
