I FINALLY got into my old hotmail account.

Long story, don't ask.

So, I was hoping to see all the messages I had, but there does not seem to be many?

Do they delete them after so long?

Yes they clear the account after so long of being inactive

You can go into settings in gmail and add your hotmail account..

If you haven't logged into Hotmail for awhile, everything should have been converted to Outlook.

Hotmail is owned by Microsoft. They went to office 365 a few years ago. Outlook.com is the site you can use for Hotmail emails.
