I got this from the dev today.
The issue here is the new Gmail. Google started to use strict permissions. Basically, any notifiers which are not from Google are now more less screwed. We will keep it under radar and will issue at least a fix to inform users about it in app - and not to f/c.
If you really want to get it work, right now the only solution is to downgrade the Gmail.

I was able to dl app called k9 mail setup my gmail account then use 3rd party app call email popup. I have email popups again.
