Bootstrap, Nandroid, and Roms

I'm happily rooted running a tethering app. I have been curious about the different ROM's out there and if they work on a D2G phone. If the process is different for this phone, what method should be used to back up my phone, who's bootstrap to use. All very confusing. Does the process differ between phones? Do ROM's for one phone work with other phones? How does all this effect the global aspect of my phone? Any answers would be great.

I would wait for a rom that has been developed for your device specifically, be patient I am sure a dev is close to getting one developed.
