Booting into the bootloader screen

A friend of mine has a droid 2 and i put apex1.4.1 on it for him. It has worked great for the past week or so except today. He was trying to get some directions on the navigator but did not have a signal in an area known to have great signal, so he restarted the phone but now it just goes to the bootloader screen even after pulling the battery several times. When he booted into the stock recovery it gave and error at the bottom of the screen that said E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

is he able to boot into clockwork? plug the phone into the wall and do a battery pull, mine boots into clockwork every time.

Thanks trook we got it into clockwork and restored a backup of Apex1.3 for now. Will try another download of 1.4.1 later when we have time. I completley forgot about pluging the phone in then battery pull to get clockwork.
