VZW disabling tethering apps from market

Those who abused tethering racking up huge data use is most likely the reason why Verizon is getting rid of the unlimited data plan. They might as well continue racking up the GBs because they won't be able to soon enough.

Other than this topic is getting out of hand IMO. The point has been made numerous times. If people want to do things illegal it will continue. It's like a lock on a car. It only keeps honest people honest, those that want in that car are still going to get it in it.

Besides that, and back to the post I was quoting, the fact is that Verizon has shown it "grandfather's" plans, so it will be new customers not those currently on unlimited that get tiered. Verizon will probably give those on unlimited 3G now some sort of incentive (such as keeping there unlimited) to upgrade to 4G.

It's been shown by track record that verizon does things like this.

The fact that they say "unlimited data" even though if you read three more words after that you would have seen "for your phone"?

I put a LIMIT on how many words I read at once. Lol. Seriously though since that is the case I'm curious as to why these providers never had any complaint about all the tethering apps in the market until now. If its a problem now then obviously by the terms of the stated contract you mentioned I signed it was a problem long before this.

yep, everyone will eventually be tiered...they're not going to let you stay grandfathered in unlimited forever.

who knows? maybe it got out of hand recently, maybe they re-examined what was happening and decided to take action. why they're doing it now is irrelevant. the point is they are doing it.

Most of us surmised it is because of the 4G network. The speed is a big incentive to get rid of your home broadband and unauthorized tether instead.

My guess is that blocking the sideloading of apps by AT&T doesn't fall under the spectrum guidelines. They are simply blocking the installation of non-market apps. In this situation, however, the FCC is clearly stating that the carrier cannot block apps for bandwidth rationale.

That's a distinction without a difference. Whether an app is in the Android market is primarily up to developer choice.

And the FCC said bandwidth couldn't be the ONLY rationale. I'm sure VZW can come up with plenty of other reasons.

Also, I doubt the FCC would take the perspective "data is data". I'm fairly certain you can block apps that enable violation of your TOS. Like I said, blocking Netflix probably would fall under this rule. VZW would argue, likely very successfully, that they aren't blocking an app for bandwidth rationale but rather an app that enables stealing of their service. They are attempting to prevent their service from being illegally extended to other devices - nothing to limit data intended to and agreed to for the smartphone itself.

Saw a blurb today that I thought said AT&T and TMo have already hidden these apps from their subscribers. So in that regard VZW is not the first, and AT&T has been more aggressive and more restrictive for some time.

I read on Android Police that only Sprint still allow all tethering apps on the market.

Agreed. I don't think the spectrum guidelines were devised to allow circumvention of a paid service. I don't believe anyone trying to invoke this argument would be successful, as it's a clear violation of something that was agreed to and is not limiting bandwidth to the phone itself like you mentioned.

Those tethering let's be honest we know tethering is not part of your data plan. The plan does not say unlimited phone data including tethering. The loop hole started when they turned the blind eye to the Droid one because they did not have a plan in place so they allowed pdanet. We took that and user that as an excuse to go crazy and now we are paying the piper. We are not entitled to use data for tethering. Is it illegal, no. In violation yes. Will you get caught, time will tell.

To the name calling there is no need to resort in insulting someone. Make your point and disagree respectfully.

If unlimited data is unsustainable then all the DSL providers, clearwire, digis, etc.. are in trouble.

The only reason it wouldn't be sustainable would be something to do with the vzw network itself.
