Tired of complaining about the Pre-Loaded Apps? See how to take action today!!

What's really funny about this thread is that I first got into rooting my phone BECAUSE of Bloatware, so I'm totally in favor of it :D

j/k - but seriously,

When I first got my DX I noticed that phone calls I received had the location listed in the dialer. I said to myself, "Neat! That's really cool, the DX rocks! It must auto-sense the area code." Twenty minutes later I get a popup saying, "DUDE LOL THAT'S CITY ID BUY ME BUY ME BUY MEEEE!!!"

So I was all like, "No dude, I'ma delete this crap." So I browse to my app folder and long press CityID and drag it to the garbage can (ok, I was new once too) - that didn't work. Then I found the uninstall feature in settings and thought, "Alright, here we go!" Uninstall was greyed out though! WTF?! "My phone must be broken!"

So I contact VZW Live Chat and say, "Hey, so I'm having trouble deleting this app on my phone"
"What app?"
"It's called CityID, I dragged it to the trashcan but that didn't work and went into Settings and the uninstall feature is greyed out."
"Oh! That's because you can't uninstall that app **sadistic laughter** sucker."

So I ended the call and thought to myself, "I bet I friggin can."
2 google searches later -> Root Your Droid X!

The rest is history. To be honest, that was THE reason I rooted my phone, I'm really glad I did, I probably would have anyway eventually as I love hacking stuff (like my psp) but I was a little more cautious with my phone - the bloat was the final straw.

Just realized this post is super long, if you read it props to you!

Can I not edit my post? I must be missing something - anyway, just wanted to add that I'll do this when Live Chat opens in CST and post my results - this is something I can get behind!

Haha look here: http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments=1&v=D4gpOQDcn7c"We like your devices. We ask that you clean up motoblur alot and allow us to remove preinstalled apps. That is not too much to ask. Look here at the amount of views people are tired of lag and loaded down system. eventually we will stop complaining and take our money elsewhere." pilotcharles747
I ave him a thumbs up. Post in the youtube link to guys!!!

Good call, everyone go give that comment a thumbs up. I just posted this in reply to moto's response to charles "@motorola It's a matter of principal as much as performance, having undeletable apps on a device is insulting to my intelligence, am I required to use these apps? If not, why can't I delete them?" I wonder if it will get approved...

I GOT A CASE NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!ONE!!~!@#~
In future harassment to Moto - use case number 110121-010563!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rhea: How can I help?
mader schramm: Well, honestly I'm not sure if you'll have a resolution to my issue, but I was just going to inquire about some software one my phone
mader schramm: *on
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Sure, what is the model of the phone?
mader schramm: It is a Droid X
chat_agent.png
Rhea: And what happen?
mader schramm: well there are these programs on there that I can't seem to delete
mader schramm: City ID for example, it's asking me to buy it to continue using it and I'd rather just delete it
mader schramm: Blockbuster is another one, I'm subscribed to Netflix so I have no need of its usage.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Oh, those are the preloaded applications and I am so sorry but preloaded applications cannot be deleted from the phone.
mader schramm: Oh, that's a shame.
mader schramm: I'd really like to remove them - they really hinder my Android experience.
mader schramm: Are they put on by the carrier?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I understand how you feel and I apologize for the inconvenience. That is actually on the system of the phone.
mader schramm: Really?
mader schramm: I thought Android was open source
mader schramm: so...wouldn't putting paid apps on it kind of
mader schramm: defeat the purpose of open source?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Rest assured that everything on my end is documented and recorded so this concern will not be taken for granted.
mader schramm: Ok
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize for that.
mader schramm: It's alright, I don't expect you to work miracles Rhea
mader schramm: one thing though, I've recently heard that the iPhone4 is coming to Verizon as well
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Thank you and my apologies for the inconvenience.
mader schramm: but it won't have any of these programs on it
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize but we do not have any information about the iPhone.
mader schramm: and I heard this is because Apple told Verizon that it was forbidden, verboten, not allowed, you know what I'm saying?
mader schramm: So I really think that if Motorolla did the same thing, these programs wouldn't come pre-installed.
mader schramm: Wouldn't you agree?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Yes, I am sorry.Motorola and Apple are both a different company.
mader schramm: I realize that...however, I'm not a fan of Apple...but it seems to me the two are becoming very similar in their business practices
mader schramm: I'd hate to have to switch from Android to iOS because of some silly programs...
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I understand.
mader schramm: Could you please pass my complaint up the ladder?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Yes, we are always gathering input from owners from calls, e-mails, the Web and other sources. I can't say for sure if this is known or common, but it will certainly be passed on. We do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you and want to assure you that Motorola does value your feedback We open a record for all consumer contacts which are then routed to the proper department for any further research.
mader schramm: Well that's great to hear, what department would this fall under just out of curiosity?
mader schramm: Rhea?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: That would be with our engineering department and they are the one who routes the report to the correct department.
mader schramm: Ah, I see.
mader schramm: I have one more thing to ask you as well.
mader schramm: I apologize that I wasn't up front with you earlier, but I actually DID find a way to remove these programs that Verizon installed on my phone.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: That would be great then. ##
lol, rhea's down with the rootz
mader schramm: Basically, like any linux distro, if you have root access you can pretty much anything you want.
mader schramm: Commonly called "Rooting"
mader schramm: Once you have root access or - superuser - you can access any filesystem and delete the apps as you see fit.
mader schramm: This is what I had to do unfortunately.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize for that.
mader schramm: Luckily the Droid X's bootloader had been circumvented by some developers in the community to accomplish this.
mader schramm: However, in a recent statement by one of your employees they stated that "people wanting to root and rom their phones should" and I quote "shop elsewhere"
mader schramm: I really like my Droid X but this is a HUGE concern for me.
mader schramm: Do you know why Moto takes such a firm stance on this issue? Using really high encryption methods on their bootloaders?
mader schramm: I know, for instance, HTC does not resort to such drastic measures.
mader schramm: So in reality I wouldn't have to switch to Apple if you don't make a request to Verizon to not allow pre-installed /system apps - I could switch to HTC..
mader schramm: But I really don't want to, you make a great product, the hardware is outstanding...
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize but on our end we could not remove the preloaded application. If you have remove that using a third party application, then that is fine but we usually do not have recommend or access to it.
mader schramm: Luckily I could as I said...but if your bootloaders get tricker to access than they already are (which I might add, is quite tricky) then it could prove impossible in the future - literally FORCING me to change manufacturers :(
mader schramm: I hope this gets resolved, do you have any information on the bootloader encryption for the Atrix for example?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I understand that. Rest assured that Motorola is doing a software update from time to time to continually enhance the system of the phone.
mader schramm: Well, unfortunately "from time to time" isn't cutting it for me.
mader schramm: For example my DX is currently on Froyo, but Google has released Gingerbread and are already working on a different version.
mader schramm: Do you know when I'll get Gingerbread? (not that it pertains in any way to what we were previously talking about)
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize but we do not have any information as of the moment of the next software update.
mader schramm: :(
mader schramm: How about the bootloader of the Atrix?
mader schramm: is it going to be as tight as the Droid X? Tighter encryption? Open?! (please?????????)
chat_agent.png
Rhea: The Atrix is not yet available. When you say bootloader, do you mean an error message on the screen?
mader schramm: Do you currently offer any devices for Android Developers?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: What do you mean?
mader schramm: I'm sorry Rhea, but unfortunately you're not as informed about your devices as I am I'm afraid.
mader schramm: Is there any one else I could speak with regarding this issue?
mader schramm: perhaps someone in the engineering department?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I respect that. I am just trying to verify further, if you mean any phones to be given out for Android developers, I apologize but there is none.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I apologize but the engineering department does not have a customer service support.
mader schramm: Well that really is a shame.
mader schramm: So who can I speak with about this?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: We respect that.
mader schramm: I suppose there is no one is there Rhea.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: I can go ahead and create an incident report about your request so that Motorola can investigate further and we can do an immediate action for that.
mader schramm: Ok!
mader schramm: Can I get a ticket number?
mader schramm: So that I can see what actions been taken on my case please?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Do you mean a copy of this session?
mader schramm: No, I mean, I work in tech support, and when an incident has been reported we create a ticket and escalate it to the department
mader schramm: I assume this is how your company works as well.
mader schramm: Well, those tickets are numbered for reference.
mader schramm: May I have this number so when I contact support again regarding this issue the future tech will be up-to-date on this issue and can inform me of what action's been taken?
chat_agent.png
Rhea: Let me generate very quick.
chat_agent.png
Rhea: 110121-010563
chat_agent.png
Rhea: That is the reference number.
mader schramm: Thank you so much Rhea. You've been very helpful.

chat_agent.png
Rhea: Yes, we are always gathering input from owners from calls, e-mails, the Web and other sources. I can't say for sure if this is known or common

This is like the 20th call Rhea has had in the last week but can't say if the issue is "known or common". That is truly handling a customer complaint.

Often times customer service is little more than a placebo to pacify angry customers and allow them an opportunity to vent. They listen to your complaint but no one hears it.

LOL, what if Rhea was the one who posted on youtube that "if you don't like it, take your business elsewhere"?

Working in it id have to assume, unfortunately, no. That's why I 'demanded' one. If I was Rhea (which, like caesar is a stock name more than likely, both probably working in india) id also close the case and not escalate it. That said, if you keep calling and chatting and referencing that number, the call volume will be outrageous, 100 tickets in one case? 200? I strongly hope people reference this number as I feel we have a better choice of being heard

I hope it gets added to the op...

Nice work mader, do you know if anyone in the future can reference that number? is it public?

"I'm sorry Rhea, but unfortunately you're not as informed about your devices as I am I'm afraid."

classic.

All you have to do is the first thing you say is
"Hey, im (calling, emailing, chatting, etc) about ticket number X. Has there been any update or actions taken yet?"
Then bother them, make our case, then request that they log in the ticket the convo or that you contacted them.

So yes, its public.
