Dear p3droid,
It seems that your thread on MDW that announced the end of rooting/tethering as we know it turned into a multipage discussion on whether or not it was right of Verizion and other carriers to charge for usage of a Mobile Hotspot. I think we can all agree that whether or not it is morally/contractually right is not important to the discussion right now. Most of us in the community just want to know what we should do from here on out.
While we appreciate your status in the community and your ability to retrieve information that others cannot, between your twitter posts and what others have been posting on MDW, here and other boards, the message has become completely confusing.
So, as a member of this community who would rather read and research to learn than ask for the 59,238th time "How do I know I'm rooted", I am utterly confused and am asking for some simple help:
Please let us know what we should do, what works, and what you believe is safe.
Forgive me because I am sure that some of these questions have been answered, but they have become so mucked up between twitter posts and everyone's attempt at helpful advice that it is not difficult to find opposing answers to all of these questions within each board.
-Is it safe to continue running your rooted/deodexed GB?
-Does leaked GB include the NVRAM hack?
-Does the unpatcher work for those running the GB leak? Many members have tried unpatching but can still tether.
-How do we know that we have eliminated the NVRAM patch?
-Are we safe to have the NVRAM hack and just not use the mobile hotspot app or wifi tether?
-For Froyo, can we still tether by means of wifi tether without the patch?
-For Froyo, can we still use the patch?
-Can we USB tether?
-Can we BT tether?
-Does the GB leak already have the capability to advise Verizon that we are rooted/tethering? Does Froyo have that within its code?
I'm sure that there are more questions that we all have, but that this encompasses most of them. Thank you for your support of the Android community.
Thank you,
(Some of...)Your Fellow Android Users (250 or point 65)
PS...If you agree with my post, please find some other way of agreeing besides posting a bunch of "+1"s and other posts that will just muddy up the thread. Also, I would appreciate it if you would refrain from attempting to decipher what p3droid means in order to answer these questions. p3droid is the one who has both leaked the GB build as well as provided the information on Verizon's (and others) plans to come down on rooting/tethering - I think we all would prefer the answers to these questions come from him.
Lastly, if anyone would like to copy this to MDW anywhere else that it may be seen, I think it would be to the benefit of the entire community...especially those who have moved on to GB
