Thanks Craig!
Do you need to register on Swype to download it? The only thing I find was the Swype Beta version. Have a link?

Ok. I'm good now. Used Root Explorer and followed your steps and now I have an even newer version of Swype. Albeit Beta, but looks pretty damn cool. I can swype in with CHinese Characters! Even though I don't know what they mean. :)

You need su root access.
You could use root explorer (or whatever I've never used it)
I used terminal emulator from the market.
Open terminal
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
that will get you root access then mount system read write
You can then delete those two files or rename them so you can always go back to them.
I then rebooted the phone and downloaded and installed from the swype website

craigeo,

I'm relatively new to this and am hoping you can break this into layman's terms.

This is what I've been able to do:

1) downloaded terminal emulator (free edition)
2) was granted Super User Permissions via emulator
3) typed: mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system (including the spaces)
it returns to # prompt

4) But how do I mount system read write?

Sorry for silly questions...

Not a problem ...
Before doing the mount command type su then enter that makes you root (or maybe you did this)
Then the mount command you typed in mounts system read write ... you should be able to remove those two files

Cool, thanks.

Now Swype seems to be hanging on the download (nearly 5 minutes now) after selecting 'Swype Beta English/Spanish'

I backed out and tried several more times. I choose Package Installer, It then tells me it will Replace application I choose, 'OK', then install. Then after a breif moment it says, 'Application not installed.'

Thoughts?

With the application not installed I've done a reboot and then redownloaded and it worked for me. I think there was an option for full download... that's the one I used

My battery life is crap too. I'm trying out green power free from the market.
