remove the google bar while still stock?

Can you remove the google bar from the main center screen? I'm still Stock 2.1. I tried for over a week to update and root my droid, but it kicked my ass and i gave up. so anywho, can the google bar be removed?

The search bar? Press and drag it into the trash bin that appears at the bottom....

"Long" press it untill it allows you to move it, then move it to the trash, which is the app drawer handle, then once it's red, let go.
