Does the X have the same glass screen as the D1 did? Only reason that I ask, is that the Verizon store where I got my new X from was pushing really REALLY hard for me to buy a screen protector. Thanks!

Yes, it has the ultra hard Gorilla Glass that the original Droid has. Screen protectors aren't necessary. If you do buy them, there are better alternatives out there.
