i was using a custom rom which was running 2.1 and then tried putting a custom 2.2 rom on and it wasnt working right so i tried to revert back to the 2.1 and now im stuck on the m loading screen. i thought i bricked it completley but i was told that if i can still get to the nandroid screen there is a chance it could be fixed. i am still able to get to that screen but im not sure what to do from here. any suggestions or am i completly bricked.

Did you make a backup before you loaded the 2.2 rom? If so, boot into your recovery, wipe data and cache then > nandroid > restore > choose the backup and install.

attempted to load backup

its weird, when i have the sd card in the slot behind the battery the nandroid screen reboots automatically after about 5-10 seconds but when i have the sd card not installed the nandroid screen doesn't reboot.

That is because your backups (nandroids) are stored on the sd card. If you are able to get into recovery and you have a backup from before, I would wipe data and cache and restore one of your backups. The "stuck at M" sounds like a rom that your phone does not like.
