Yes, the 2.1 update IS crap. I'll give you that. But the Storm 2????? REALLY??????
This is one of the most mediocre updates I have ever seen with such a popular device. At least Blackberry was updating the Storm regularly as has Palm. This is not entirely Motorola's fault as Google seems to have been dropping the ball on the bug fixes too. Instead of adding another worthless app into the deck (Goggles) there are many things to fix. In fairness, the Storms had so many problems they had to update the phone regularly.
Screen dropping icons??? Never heard of that one. Like someone said earlier, you could have WAY too many apps installed.
This is a very well known problem. I have had this too A LOT after the update. What happens is that the home screen loses all the icons - it's just blank. There is a thread here about someone saying you have to stop and start the "home" app that is running in the background but that didn't work for me. I'm sick of having to reboot the phone too in order to have any icons on my home screen. I have less apps installed than many here and this problem only happened occasionally. Perhaps it's all the crap I have to deal with the dumb, lame brained decisions that still aren't fixed and running as services, e.g. myLock, etc. (although even stripped down to only myLock, which works when it works, same problem.) Yes, the core system should allow a user to turn off the locking at certain times (especially in calls), turn off the autosensors that don't work at night or if you have long hair, have a simple button to answer calls instead of that idiotic swipe that frequently requires multiple attempts - especially when the phone lags, etc.
Facebook app problem? Yeah, it sucks. BLAME FACEBOOK AND 3RD PARTY DEVELOPERS FOR THAT ONE. NOT THE PHONE. I personally use the mobile site, (not the touch screen mobile site). It works flawlessly. Just add a bookmark shortcut instead of an app shortcut.
Doesn't work flawlessly for me. Perhaps it's Xscope that doesn't like to play well with the site.
And as far as task killing? Battery dying? How much do you use your phone? All the time? Battery's gonna die if you are always on it. The iPhone NOW has "multi tasking" but no task manager. The storm 2 doesnt have multi tasking as far as i know, correct me if i'm wrong. So if you still want to jump ship, go ahead. (enjoy that blackberry market!......oh wait)
Blackberry doesn't need a market. All you have to do is go to any distributor rather than that horrible market where you can't find anything you want easily. The battery life on the Droid for phone use is pretty good. but for regular usage, it seems (and I could be wrong) that it is much less than my iPhone. I don't think it has to do with multitasking. It may have to do with all those pixels and not considering making the phone a little larger than it is already to power it properly. There isn't a day that goes by where I am not seriously concerned with the phone going dead in a business day so I try to carry an external charger in my bag. I keep the screen brightness at its lowest setting. Unfortunately only rooting allows you to do power management functions including clocking the CPU, etc.
And of course there are lots of free apps that are crap. Its called open source. Google is not Apple. They are not as controlling with their market. And even still the iPhone market has some sh*t apps. It happens. There are sh*t developers believe it or not. BUT there are a LOT more free apps per ratio on the Android market as is on the iPhone market.
This is partially true. It's also much harder to develop on Android and there are also other major problems that make developers question whether it's worth the effort for a variety of reasons.
You are obviously a minority being disappointed with your droid.
He's not disappointed with his Droid. He's disappointed with his Droid after it was updated to 2.1. I agree- this caused much incompatibility and not all developers are fixing their apps.
Some of the problems he experiences might deal with limitations in the API. This may take time to address. But fragmentation is killing this phone. Every app developer has to make multiple copies for every flavor of Android being developed. There should be a core set which is uniform and customizing on another layer, which I'm sure has been done but can't understand completely what is the problem.
I thought that 2.1 would bring something more than a Gallery app (which is cool) and more junk thrown onto the deck. The enhancements to improve battery life have led many to question how they did it and whether it caused additional lag. I'll say this much - my phone now lags much longer than it did before and more frequently. And applications are still "clunky" and not smooth. It still looks, feels and operates like something kludged together. It's still better than the iPhone for ability to use many different apps but it's far less reliable. My voice recording apps are all unreliable. I'm far more concerned with something crapping out on me than I ever was with any other phone, e.g. Palm, Blackberry and iPhone. It shouldn't be that way but I'm not hearing direction.
