New phones a little too big

It will be interesting to see if it just become a certain device for a certain market, or if the entire smartphone market go toward that direction.

Might end-up being a few sized screens, but like I said I think the "premium" phone will have some sort of slide-out expandable screen.

What would be cool is a phone that had a storage space for a bluetooth earpiece so it's always with your phone and just snaps out when needed....charges when snapped in and the phone is plugged in. Would be an easy route to add content and charge a premium for it.

That concept seems familiar I believe a phone or a device is out that does that, cant think of it now.

Projector on the wall or HUD on your glasses :)

LOL! I hadn't even thought of the potential for bluetooth virtual-reality like glasses. Such a concept would be a theoretical "max" screen size, no?

On the other hand, think of the dangers of people wearing these reading email while they're trying to drive!

people wont do that. Everybody either use a bluetooth/ handsfree device. People signal before they turn, they do not cut any one off....and the roads are safe to drive on.:icon_eek:

Sony demonstrates rollable OLED ? Cell Phones & Mobile Device Technology News & Updates | Geek.com

There was a buggy (I think) prototype out a few years ago that ran out of funding. Interesting that no one seems to have bought the tech, but maybe because they had their own in development.

I see Sony rolled this out (no pun intended) in May.

Another very appealing aspect of this is the low power consumption, as we all know the display is by far the biggest battery hogger (unless you are playing an intensive game).

Touchscreen capability would be huge, but I'm guessing there would be an issue with people poking holes in their screen!. Then again, for viewing I'm not sure how necessary that would be if combined as an add-on to a phone with a traditional touchscreen. Heck, if you think outside the box, you could have different sized "tubes" that plug into an HDMI port and you could have a huge variety of potential screen sizes with varying lengths and widths.

Probably 2-3 years away is my guess, but it's impossibe for a layman like myself to predict.

Interesting. I guess two forces against it: 1) people are relatively loyal to their bluetooth headset of choice 2) not enough to sway people to purchase if the phone itself isn't very competitive (know nothing of the phone, just saying)

thats it thanks...

I'm thinking they should keep the size the same, but make the borders smaller on the actual face of the phone.

Example.. look at your droid (assuming most people here have a standard Droid). Drop the keyboard, but make the upper layer the size of the lower layer. Make the top border smaller, along with the lower border, making the screen itself bigger. Bam. Bigger screen, same size, no keyboard.

Of course, techincally it might not be possible, but it's just the first thought that popped into my head. I have a Droid now, love it, very happy with it, but still haven't seen anything I would actually spend money for. The new Droid x or whatever looks REALLY nice, but it's bigger, and I'm not sure if I want that. I'd rather have a faster phone than a bigger phone. The Droid is too thick, and a tiny bit too heavy, but neither is a deal breaker for me, just a preference.

I'm surprised no one has suggested holographic displays and keyboards. Then we can watch people walking down the street talking to the air and staring into space and pushing imaginary buttons. It will be even more difficult to distinguish the hip from the deranged.

Is anyone else thinking that these new phones are getting too big. Yeah, I want my phone as big as the one I had in the 90's.
Not really. There are devices of various sizes out there. The smaller ones just tend to be underpowered (pick your priority).

My Nokia from the 90's was definitely much larger and much heavier than my Droid or any of the newer large devices being released.

that was hip...then. If some one broke that out now they would be looked at funny for using an outdated, heavy, cancer cluster causing phone.

Well another thing to keep in mind is that these aren't just phones anymore. With the introduction of the Moto Droid and the phones that follow these devices are becoming more of a netbook/low end laptop replacement. Also with better and better camera technology they may also become a viable alternative to a separate point and shoot.
