Motorola Droid 2.1

While waiting for 2.1 I decided to follow the very simple instructions to install Bugless Beast 7.4. I also did the overclocking to a modest 800 to be on the safe side.

It is very nice, and I am fully backed up if I would like to go back. However I see no reason why I would. When 2.1 comes out I can fully revert back to stock and get the update if I wish. The best part is that I would be in no rush.

Here is the step by step guide that I used with no problems. It explains things very well for noobs like me. And there are links for simple explanations of terms if you are not fully aware what they mean.

Enjoy guys!

So the link previously listed shows an update which says a Motorola Rep confirmed a release of Feb 10th at a Verizon event for the 2.1 release.

We'll i wonder if we will start to see anything else stating this date? Let the countdown begin again?

My guess..... don't count on anything that is in the link. It looks so made up it is unreal.

Enjoy your fully functioning DRIOD at 2.0.1, and if you want some of the "goodies" now, go get the APP's that have been ported and enjoy. There is a working Multi-touch Gallery, Multi-Touch Maps, 5 Home screens and the 3D launch tray.

hey it was posted for you guys to judge I will keep my hopes up but not expect any miracles from Motorola.:)

I notice that using that guide says:
In addition, following this guide will cause official Motorola updates to be blocked. So if a new update comes out, you will need to revert back to a mostly stock phone to get the update or wait for them to re-hack the new update!!!

Do you see that as a positive to not be able to receive the OTA updates and if you don't want the updates why?... because you've basically already got everything?.. or do you expect hidden enhancements you may miss if you don't get the OTA?

I do want the overclock abilities just not sure whether to be patient to see if the OTA 2.1 comes out... then I can simply root and overclock... seems the cleanest setup to me?.... but I could be wrong......

Maybe a rooted 2.0.1 with all the 2.1 updates is superior?... any comments?

Personally I have decided to simply wait for an Official 2.1 to come out with all the optimizations and driver updates from Motorola/Google rather than use a 2.0.1 base with 2.1 apps.

I simply would like to see how an official 2.1 runs and how slow/quick it is. While I have no doubt that some of the custom roms are quite nice, however they basically run Nexus One optimized software. I think they will run much better with their various enhancements when an official 2.1 is released and they are able to use that as their base.

As for OC'ing the phone, I am hopeful 2.1 will bring some performance improvements and then later down the line when the phone starts to get slugish and not run the latest android quite as well, i will probably consider OC'ing it.

thanks.. I appreciate your candid balanced viewpoint.

BTW.... is there anyway to tell how fast the cpu is running "without" being rooted?

Or how you do plan on knowing how fast the cpu is clocked to when OTA 2.1 comes out "If".... doesn't someone have to root before they can tell?

There is an app called Android System Info on the market which gives a lot of system info including cpu speed and it doesnt require root.

Do I see the OTA being blocked a positive? To me it's not positive or a negative, because in ten minutes I can revert back to stock without root. Then I get the update.... The only positive is that I don't have to wait for it anymore because I have lots of new features. I love the native browser with pinch to zoom, and the ability to have the 2.1 keyboard with speak to text. It is still 2.0.1... just with all sorts of enhancements.

I will never miss out on anything....

I sat back and thought about doing it or not, and worried... But when I finally decided to do it I found it was FAR easier than I imagined. That link I posted above is the best. You have to type everything in by hand but that way you understand what you did. I am very happy I did it and now I see I shouldn't have waited. However I understand people why people are concerned about doing it, because I was also.

Going very slowly and carefully the whole process took me maybe an hour because I've never done this before. If I had to do it again it would be quicker.

Whenever the update comes out, it will take me 10 or 15 minutes to get back to stock then get the update.

Each person needs to decide for themselves if they want to take the hour or so to do this or not. If you are happy with things the way they are and not in a rush... not problem... just keep things as they are. This is for impatient people like me... :)

P.S. If I can do it.... most others can also.

you can't tell me they'd release 2.1 on the HTC before the Droid....release it on a device that's at 1.5 and have them leap frog a 2.0 Droid and go straight to 2.1 :icon_eek:

I know since I have SPRecovery installed that OTA is blocked. But, if your rooted, you should be able to get back to a stock image if you need to.

But you couldn't get a stock image of 2.1 until someone backed it up and posted it or how?

Wouldn't you be forced to "wait" until 2.1 was extracted and posted by someone so you could manually update to it?

And for those wanting to go back to 2.0.1 "non rooted" so they could receive the OTA update, wouldn't you they have to do it "before" the update attempted to be pushed to their individual phone or can they force it by going to "update" on the droid to receive the OTA?

This is really bad.Im tired of waiting for an update that isn't all that in the first place. The update is just some bug fixes a new gallery and some live wallpapers thats it.If you want the update ROOT YOUR PHONE.People need to stop posting things that have NOTHING to do with this 2.1 thread and people need to shut up and wait.It cant be much longer because i have read where we should get it in 2 weeks.Motorola is optimizing it for the Droid so it will run smoothly. They are also fixing the bugs and probably adding last minute muti touch. The thread is out of CONTROL and is getting out of hand with outrageous owners who are willing to dump there Droid over a stupid update.Stop leaving bogus questions and wait.
