making a custom theme...?

I'm really wanting to make a custom theme for my droid. However I have NO clue where to start.
I've searched the web and only got further confused.

So my fellow pals, any ideas or suggestions?

Probably one of the easiest methods would be to start with another theme and use 7zip to pull out the drawable-hdpi and any other folders that have images, then modify them to your liking, then put them back in the zip. I couldn't tell you exactly as I've never done it but that should at least get you started.
