Lookout/Mobile Security Apps?

You know, the funny part about this whole thing is that despite the complete and utter uselessness of such apps, lookout specifically, they are one of the most downloaded from the market place.

It just goes to show you how many really really REALLY "SMART" people haven't the slightest clue. People just assume that it will keep their precious phones safe from evil viruses THAT DON'T EXIST, and download/install them anyway. IN TURN, draining more battery which leads to people complaining about how their droid sucks cause of their short battery life.

Sorry for the rant, but let's not forget about Advanced Task Killer now...
I love you JK but yeah ur right, taskkillers and antiviruses have one thing in common, they just drain your battery, with some exceptions.

Don't get me wrong, lookout is a useless battery drainer. I personally would never use it. I was simply explaining the developers purpose.

And I disagree. It doesn't drain the battery. It registers for specific events, and then idles with no CPU or memory drain except when those specific events occur. For those events, it isn't a useless drain but a useful one. There are Android viruses and malware in the wild, and people lose their phones or have them stolen all the time, so the product is useful for the functions it was designed to protect against, and doesn't drain the battery otherwise.

looks like there's a contradiction with the recent outbreak of malware in the market and that lookout is the company that's constantly being sourced for listing off the malicious programs.

but has anyone else had an issue with their phones rebooting constantly after installing lookout?

If you want to locate or lock or wipe a phone remotely - SeekDroid 99 cents
If you want AV bloatware - Lookout - which caught none of the garbage that was recently removed from the market.

I had Lookout for a while, but I uninstalled it for 3 reasons:

1- No updates...We've heard about viruses and one thing is that I've seen is that when you fix a hole, people find another. During the time I had Lookout (11/09-08/10) there were no updates. I'd expect something that would improve to meet new threats.

2- Scans after install...I'd install an app and after it has installed successfully I'd see a message that it's scanning the installed app. Personally I'd like to see it scan the app before installation.

3- Weekly emails that don't tell much...Here's part of an email I got from them:

August 2
Lookout handled 1 security event.
Virus scan completed: Files scanned: 198. Infected files found: 0. Files quarantined: 0.

Now what was that security event? No links and I saw that weekly. Maybe if I knew what was causing the "security event" I could take steps to correct it.

Wavesecure, as mentioned before, can find your phone, as seen at Don’t Steal From a Compsci - A Rambling Slate

I can't dismiss Lookout as useless. The last news about a virus (as seen at http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/03/01/the-mother-of-all-android-malware-has-arrived-stolen-apps-released-to-the-market-that-root-your-phone-steal-your-data-and-open-backdoor/) it showed that it found 30 bad apps. Still, I'm in no hurry to reinstall it.
