It would seem that Nvidia's Tegra 2 has a fierce competitor racing by. The new LG Optimus 3D Android-based smartphone, which utilizes a Texas Instruments OMAP 4 dual-core chip was hitting 2985 in Quadrant during LG's presentation at MWC today! The guys at Phonearena got hold of one and did some testing of their own in the video above. They only scored 2800 with the device, but it's important to note that this is still the highest Quadrant score ever reported on an unmodified stock Android phone!

They compared their findings to the LG Optimus 2X which scored 2700 using the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core chip, and the Samsung Galaxy S2 with the same Nvidia chip, which strangely scored a meager 1950. The poor score of the Galaxy S2 is probably due to Samsung's notorious poor file management issues.

These are pretty crazy scores. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these puppies. What are your thoughts? Worth waiting on, or is the Thunderbolt too tempting...

Some of these phones are definitely worth waiting on. It seems HTC is more worried about Sense than cutting edge specs which is what I would much rather see.

And that may not be a bad plan. It's value they can own and deliver because the hardware is all becoming more or less the same. Like I didn't even know about their Sense Live or whatever online service is - sounds pretty slick and convenient although maybe as I think about it I'm not sure why you would really need to use it.

A quadrant score of 3000...While quadrant may be optimized for dual core now, Android and the apps still aren't. Still, that's about 25% faster than the TBolt (which scored @ 2400?) and I'd expect potential for more with the next version of Android fully optimized and tweaked for dual core. That is going to help battery life, too.

With the prices for these phones and looking at maybe having to mostly live with them for 2 years, I'd wait a few more months for the Bionic. But that'st just me. Dual core over single core is a REAL upgrade, not a marginal one.

These 3D Smartphones will change everything, trust me.

I don't enjoy 3D movies all that much because I don't like to have to "adjust" to watching it. And while that video was impressive (as was the blogger), he did mention having to adjust.

I could see what he was talking about - imagine it being like those old stereoscopic (or whatever they're called) contraptions or 3D painting impressions on thin bronze plates. Interesting but I don't think for me.

3D is not for everyone but the glasses-free aspect will push for mainstream in 1-2 years.

Yeah, I meant I would much rather focus on the specs. I think the Android software is great without a skin. I definitely will be getting a dual core phone, I don't see the point of single core anymore. Gotta look at the future IMO.

6-8 months after the dual cores are out the quad core phones will be released. h/w technology is going to go leaps and bounds better for a couple years. While I do like the Bionic and I was heavily on the bandwagon for it, I actually like Sense 2.x, and am looking forward to 2.1 (sense not Android). By the time I am ready for my next phone, quad cores will be the mainstream. I can skip the dual cores as aside from an occasional movie or such (which my D1 does fine) I don't stress my phones too much.

Fair points, but I think quad core is overkill, mostly for tablets and don't think we'll see it any time soon in smartphones. Although the faster speeds and efficiency of those next-gen dual cores are worth noting.

Eric Schmidt said today that Ice Cream is combining Honeycomb and Gingerbread. Google also unveiled a video editing application for tablets. To me dual core is going to be a big leg-up in a few months. It's a little different waiting another 8-10 months (or more) for quad cores that might not even come to smartphones in that time frame. I'm a widget glutton, and I think more widgets - and more powerful widgets - are going to make dual core a necessity.

Anyway, it's why I'll be careful to sign a 1-yr contract this next time around. But I figure dual core should be just fine for a few years (possibly more) until a truly beastly smartphone makes replacing the PC a reality.

Once there are a few nice duel cores (@1 or 1.3 GHz per core) on the market, the Quad cores running 1.5 per core are going to be coming out.

I'm going to get the last generation of super refined single core now, then next phone is probably going to be a Quad core. By that time Apps and the OS is going to fully support and optimize multi core processors. So I'll probabl be bypassing duel core completely assuming the industry continues to try and put the newest processors in phones.

Haha I thought that was pretty funny. I'm not too interested in the 3D aspect. But seeing the OMAP4 get those kind of quadrant scores makes me happy that this is the chipset the Droid 3 may be using.

To clarify, the OMAP4 and Tegra2 are essentially the same board, both TI OMAP4 based, with the tegra having an nvidia ulv geforce on board instead of the powersvr540...

Now 'little' things like choice of memory management controllers and additional integrated cpu units are the only other difference.

So the OMAP 4 is using the Power VR? I assumed it wasnt. Like how Samsung jumped to the Mali, which is supposed to be better than the PowerVR.

Early benchmarks say otherwise for the Mali...but it is still early.
