I originally bought my bionic on release day. 3g was always stable until verizon brings 4g to my area after which it was only headaches. Eventually I ran the leaked 5.5.893 update for a week or two then eventually was at 5.7.893 for a while.
I went to verizon and showed them straight up that I installed a leaked firmware and now I can't upgrade. I posted all this in another thread. Basically they didn't care and shipped me a replacement.
Before I got my replacement we acquired the capability to go back to stock. Which I did and when to 5.9.901 right away. I saw alot of improvement in the radio but 4g would not stay on for more than 10 to 30 mins before switching to 3g (even in a strong 4g area). At least the switching back and forth works decent.
Now my replacement comes which I decide to keep. I only installed the 5.5.893 ota with forever root. I am totally blown away with how well the radio/modem works. Even at home where i'm on the outside edge of 4g, I get a constant 4g connection for hours. Rarely does it switch to 3g for a few minutes. Normally the other way around. To get to my office I go in and out of coverage. The replacement handles all that beautifully.
I've seen most people claim the 5.5.893 leak and official ota are the same. If so then my first phone must have been truly defective unless verizon just did the ultimate fix on their network.
I never ran the official ota on my original phone so I can't compare.
I though about going to 5.9.901, but now I think I will stay put for now. I'm not gonna update when everything works perfect.
Also my headphone jack wasn't great on my first bionic out of the box. The replacement is good in that area.
