According to some industry intel, Sony may be looking to broaden its horizons and extend its PlayStation ecosystem beyond their own hardware. HTC could be the first non-Sony OEM to get Playstation certified devices. Sony’s Kazuo Hirai, who has recently become Sony's CEO has indicated that the PlayStation Suite platform “isn’t an ecosystem where we want to keep everything within the Sony family.” He elaborated that the PlayStation Suite should become a “cross-platform endeavor."

In fact, after Sony has had a couple of very bad quarters in a row, Hirai made the following comments that seem to highlight how bad things are for Sony and point them in a new direction, “if we don’t turn this around, we could be sitting in some serious trouble. We really need to buckle down and be realistic." He concluded with, “We can’t just continue to be a great purveyor of hardware products even though some people expect us to do that.”

If this new deal with HTC goes through, it will bring games previously limited to devices like the XPERIA Play to HTC phones and tablets in the future. The reports suggest that the deal could come as early as Mobile World Congress this month, and full certification would come in the second half of the year. Sony has since confirmed it has been negotiating with other firms for PlayStation gaming since late 2011.

There's a lot of potential with this. Think beyond games to the whole PS network. Stuff like plugging your phone in to an LCD at a hotel and having access to your PS3 Netflix, or NFL Sunday Ticket, etc....And the reverse, as well, with something like HBO GO or Xfinity (which is on phones/tablets, but yet to come to the PS3). Now if Sony would just unlock the PS3 and we could get some Android love....

If Sony continues to struggle, maybe Google will buy them. Would make for some nice hardware for Google's assault on the home entertainment system. Hmmmm.....Sony market cap at $19.2B? Might be a nice speculative play (obviously with a good bit of downside risk when the CEO is talking about "...otherwise we could be in trouble".

The other interesting aspect of this is it looks like pretty much all electronics makers are starting to struggle. TV's and computers are sucking wind, and Apple seems to be the only smartphone maker making money (which is scary when you consider how much smartphones are propped-up by the carrier contracts/subsidies to begin with).

I don't need ps3 to get that experience in a Hotel, I can do all that on my Razr now...

I thought this was Sony's plan all along.
