How to replace phone contacts w/ gmail

I just spent a 2 hours cleaning up my contacts in gmail after syncing w/ my phone which had contacts from facebook, gmail, and previous phonebook. Can you replace the contacts on the phone w/ the contacts in gmail? I.e. I want all the contacts I deleted and merged in gmail to translate to my phone. I am using a Droid X stock 2.2. I did not want to try syncing contacts for the fear that my phone would just undo all the work I did in gmail. Thx

I have the EXACT same issue. Hope someone will reply to this thread! Just finding a way to DELETE the entire contacts database from the phone would suffice; then, I could sync with Gmail safely. But right now, the phone has such an incredible amount of crud that it sometimes can take 30 seconds just to locate a contact!!
